Corban Cruises in Tuneup Against Kwantlen Poly

SALEM, Ore. – Junior Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) scored a game-high 43 points on 18-for-24 shooting from the field, as Corban's women's basketball team captured a convincing victory over Kwantlen Polytechnic, 122-29, in an exhibition game Saturday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Steigleman made 18 shots in 24 attempts from the field en route to scoring 43 points to go along with three rebounds, four assists, and a game-high tying seven steals in just 25 minutes of action.
Corban started strong against Kwantlen Tech, quickly jumping ahead early by 10 points (12-2) over the opening three-plus minutes. With a fastbreak lay-in following a steal with 16:34 to go in the first half, Steigleman gave the Warriors their 10-point cushion. The Warriors pushed the tempo, using stiff defense and a strong transition game to build a 44-15 lead by the midpoint of the first period. The lead swelled to 77-28 at halftime, as Corban hit 62.5% of their first-half field goal attempts while holding KPU to just five made field goals in the period.
Continuing their strong play in the second half, the Warriors again shot over 50% from the field while holding the Eagles to a single point in the period. Corban held Kwantlen Tech scoreless for almost 14 minutes into the half, as the Eagles' lone score came on a three throw with 6:21 remaining in the game. KPU was unable to convert any of their 23 field goal attempts in the final frame.
In addition to Steigleman's heroics, senior Rachel Harter (Grass Valley, Calif.) anchored the paint for Corban with 17 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, including a game-high seven offensive records. Senior Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) contributed 18 points, six rebounds, a game-high seven assists, and a game-high tying seven steals while directing the Warrior offense. Senior Kayla Shaughnessy (Camano Island, Wash.) and sophomore Melissa Jones (Klamath Falls, Ore.) contributed nine and eight points respectively from the bench as ten Warriors scored.
Erin Mufford and Mel Poce led Kwantlen Tech with six points each, while Samantha McPhail grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Eagles. Taminder Dhaliwal was credited with KPU's lone assist.
The Warriors shot 49-for-84 (58.3%) from the field, including 5-for-16 (31.3%) from long range while converting 19-for-32 (59.4%) from the foul line. Meanwhile, the KPU finished 5-for-48 (10.4%) from the field, including 2-for-15 from three-point distance. The Eagles shot 17-for-23 (73.9%) on free throws.
As a team, Corban achieved a new high in points in a single game with 122 and field goals made with 49. The Warriors also registered 26 steals, just two thefts short of the all-time record of 28 steals set in a game against Walla Walla in 1995.
Corban will officially tip-off its regular season next Friday, November 12th, when the Warriors travel to California to face Westmont in a game scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in Santa Barbara.
