Southern Oregon Defeats Concordia 85-79 in CCC Opener

PORTLAND, Ore. – Concordia came back from a second half double-digit deficit, but Jordan Highland and Dex Daum combined for 60 points to lead the visiting Southern Oregon Raiders over the Cavaliers 85-79 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener for both teams Friday night.

The loss drops Concordia’s record to 4-5 overall, 0-1 in CCC play. Southern Oregon improves to 7-2 overall, 1-0 in the CCC with the win.

The Cavaliers had no answer for the SOU duo of Highland and Daum, who combined to shoot 24-of-31 from the field. Highland posted a double-double with 31 points and 10 rebounds, both game-highs. Daum connected on 6-of-8 attempts from beyond the three-point line.

Concordia led for most of the first half, using an 18-7 run over a 10-minute stretch to turn an 11-12 deficit into a 29-19 lead with 3:36 remaining in the period. Following a Southern Oregon timeout, the Raiders closed the period scoring 14-straight points to take a 33-29 lead into the break.

Both teams struggled from the field in the first half, as the visitors connected on 42.9 percent of their shots (11-of-28) while Concordia connected on only 37.5 percent (9-of-24).

A pair of free throws by Adam Herman to open the second half ended SOU’s 14-point streak, but the Raiders pushed their lead to 11 points at 47-36 with 16:52 remaining in the period. Concordia responded with a 13-4 run to pull within two at 51-49 on Gage Aker’s layup with 13:17 remaining.

The teams exchanged baskets for awhile, with Southern Oregon pushing the lead to six and Concordia pulling back, eventually tying the game at 59-59 with 9:20 left in the game. Concordia had chances to take the lead, but Daum and Highland combined for 15 points down the stretch to give the Raiders the 85-79 victory.

Herman (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead CU, connecting on 8-of-9 shots from the field and all six attempts at the free throw line. Jordan Sweeney (Los Angeles, Calif./St. Bernard H.S.) posted 19 points and six rebounds. Drew Preuninger (Camas, Wash./Camas H.S.) tallied 15 points and Kevan West (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) added 13.

Concordia returns to action tomorrow night, when the Cavaliers host Oregon Tech in a CCC game at 5:30 p.m. at Cavalier Gymnasium.
