BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore.--For the second straight game to open the season Concordia struck for an early goal, but against Great Falls on Sunday the Cavaliers continued the attack to roll to a 5-0 win at Delta Park.

With the result, Concordia evened its record to 1-1-0 on the young season while Great Falls fell to 2-1-0.

In the season opener, the Cavaliers were stuck with a 3-1 loss after connecting on an early goal. That wasn’t going to be the case while facing the Argonauts, as CU erupted for three first-half scores before adding a pair in the final stages of the game.

Jordan Correa opened the assault with a long strike in the 7th minute of action after settling a pass from teammate Septi Danciu. Danciu returned in the 24th minute for his first collegiate goal after an assist from Facundo Dipascuale to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 advantage.

Assisted by Mirza Ramic, Jared Brace, the returning CCC leader in goals scored last year, rocketed a shot from 12 yards out in the 31st minute to pad the CU lead.

Duplicating Danciu’s accomplishment, Ramic followed his assist with a goal of his own in the 69th minute of play while the Cavs got the aid of an own goal in the 77th minute to close out the scoring.

“The guys were much, much better in their possession and their movement off the ball,” CU head coach Dan Birkey said. “We let down after the early goal last week and our composure today showed a sign of maturity.”

Claudio Lazar recorded the shutout for the Cavs by stopping five shots while playing the full 90 minutes in between the posts.  Credited with seven saves, Great Falls’ keeper Zach Johnson was charged with the loss.

Overall, the Cavaliers outshot the Argonauts 20-to-11 with 13 of their attempts considered on goal. The Cavaliers also finished with a 5-to-2 edge in corner kicks.

“One of the things we talked about after our game last week was sticking with the plot,” Birkey said. “Our guys established that difference in training this week and it showed on the pitch today.”

Concordia returns to action on Friday, Sept., 3 when it hosts Rocky Mountain at 7 p.m.
