BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore.—Posting their second straight shutout to open Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action, Concordia defeated Northwest Christian 2-0 at Delta Park on Saturday.

With the win, Concordia extended its winning streak to five matches improve to 5-1-0 on the season while NCU dropped to 4-2-0. Although still early in the season, Concordia (2-0-0) is one of just two teams without a loss in CCC action with College of Idaho also resting with two wins in two matches. NCU (1-1-0) joins three other teams with a split through two league games.

Facundo Dipascuale (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Lakeridge H.S.) gave the Cavaliers the early lead with a penalty kick conversion in the 21st minute. After being called for a hand ball inside the 18-yard box, Dipascuale placed the penalty kick to the left side and past the Beacon goalkeeper.

Despite outshooting the Beacons 19-9, the Cavaliers managed just one more goal in the contest with Sept Danciu (Bistrita, Romania/Evergreen H.S.) capitalizing on crafty passing from teammates Michael Chamberlain (Wailua, Hawaii/Isnald School) and Matt Caniglia (San Francisco, Calif./Lebanan H.S.). The trio led a counter attack in the 55th minute where Chamberlain pushed the ball from the center of the field to the right side where Caniglia darted the ball to a racing Danciu.

Now one-on-one with NCU keeper Nick Kratzke (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds-Woodway H.S.), Danciu blasted the shot into the upper corner to provide the Cavs the 2-0 advantage.

“The team feels good to earn another win, but they also realize that there were numerous scoring efforts that did not get put away,” CU head coach Dan Birkey said. “We needed more venom up front. There were two or three clangors off the post and crossbar and several sitters which the guys usually finish in training. It was a positive result with no injuries, so we live to play again.”

Along with the shot differential, Concordia managed eight corner kicks compared to just two for the Beacons. The Cavs, however, out fouled the Beacons 18-12.

Kratzke came up with six saves on the day while taking the loss. Claudio Lazar (Ploiesti, Romania/Minai Viteazul H.S.) pulled in two saves to complete the shutout.

“My hat is off to the defensive line and Lazar,” Birkey said. “I never overlook an effort of 90 minutes without a goal scored against. Jordan Green, Evan Denmark, Ryan Candella and Shaunovan Wilson really kept everything in front of them and Claudio was rarely called upon.”

Seven different Beacons got off a shot with Chris Longi (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran H.S.) and Carlos Sandoval (Rio Rancho, N.M./Rio Rancho H.S.) leading the attack with a pair of chances at the net.

Concordia will return to action next week when it takes on a pair of CCC road challenges at Northwest University and Evergreen State. The Cavs will play NU on Friday, Sept. 24 and at Evergreen State the following day with both matches kicking off at 3 p.m.

On the same two days, the Beacons will host Warner Pacific and College of Idaho in Eugene, Ore. NCU’s match against the Knights will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday while its Saturday tilt against the Yotes will have a 6 p.m. start.
