Evergreen's Men Grabbed Their First Win of the Season Last Weekend Against Corban University
The Evergreen State College Men’s Soccer team hosted a pair of Cascade Conference opponents over the past weekend. Corban University was first to up for the home town Geoducks. Evergreen demonstrated a nice possession style which created some difficulty for the Warriors of Corban University. Evergreen took control of the game after a nice passing sequence culminated in a centering pass from Chris Miller (Auburn, WA / JR, Jefferson HS) that was tucked home by freshman striker Dyson Fowler (Sammamish, WA / FR, Mt Si HS).
Evergreen looked to put the game out of reach midway through the second half when freshman Albert Anabtawi (Yakima, WA / FR, Eisenhower HS) slotted home a penalty kick after a Corban handball was called in the box. Two time offensive player of the week Gus Bermudez was determined to keep the game interesting as he muscled past a pair of Evergreen defenders before shooting past Casey Collins (Seattle, WA / SR, Whatcom CC) to bring the visitors to within one with only a few minutes left on the clock. The Evergreen defense held strong down the stretch to secure the victory.
League leading Concordia University brought their high powered offense to town on Saturday. Sporting a hefty three goals per game average scoring mark through the season, Concordia looks to be the class of the conference. The Geoducks limited the Cavaliers to a mere 13 shots on the day while garnering 9 of their own. While the match was attractive for the quality of possession, the chances at goal were infrequent, but dramatic.
The game ultimately turned on a penalty kick with five minutes remaining. A Geoduck defender brought down a Cavalier forward after a quick Concordia restart caught Evergreen napping. Shaunovan Wilson tucked the spot kick into the lower left corner to seal the victory.
The Geoducks host Northwest Christian University next Friday at 3:00pm and Oregon Institute of Technology on Saturday at 3:00 as they continue through their Cascade Conference slate.
