BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore.—After a scoreless first half, the No.3-ranked Concordia women’s soccer team defeated the University of the Fraser Valley 2-0 on Friday afternoon.

With the win, Concordia improve to 3-0-0 on the season while UFV fell to 3-2-0.

The Cavalier defense held the Cascades to just two shots in the game, but were stymied to a 0-0 score until the 71st minute when a UFV defender was called with a hand ball in its own box.

Taking the team’s first penalty kick of the season, senior forward Kelton McFadden (Boise, Idaho/Timberline H.S.) coolly placed the ball past the opposing keeper to what would eventually be rendered the game-winning goal as the Cavaliers posted its third straight shutout to start the season.

Tori Talbutt (Boise, Idaho/Capital H.S.) collected two saves on the day to keep her goal against average clean for the season.

Sophomore midfielder Chelsea Malness (Meridian, Idaho/Meridian H.S.) launched a 20-yard strike in the 81st minute for the team’s clinching goal and Malness’ first goal of her collegiate career.

“In the first half, we weren’t doing a lot of the little things that help us be successful.   Partly, I think UFV did a good job of dictating the pace and style of game in the first half, and we didn’t adjust,” CU head coach Grant Landy said. “The second half was a different story. We were more aggressive, started playing balls on the ground and finding combinations. Our work rate picked up as well which is key for us. It seemed like a matter of time before we would find the net. I was proud of our adjustments at halftime.”

The Cavs outshot the Cascades 13-2 with nine of their shots being counted as on goal. CU also enjoyed a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Both teams committed 13 fouls.

Concordia returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Carroll College at PCC Rock Creek in Beaverton, Ore. Opening kick is set for noon.
