BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. – After College of Idaho took a 53-49 lead, Concordia outscored the Coyotes 19-5 in the final 8:22 to take a 68-58 Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball victory Friday night at Cavalier Gymnasium.
The win ends a two-game skid for the Cavaliers, improving their record to 16-7 overall, 8-3 in the CCC. College of Idaho falls to 12-10 overall, 7-5 in conference play.
Concordia shot 50 percent (15-of-30) from the field in the first half, including 7-of-10 from beyond the three-point arc, to take a 42-33 lead into the break. The Cavaliers led by as many as 15 points in the half, when Courtney May’s three-pointer gave CU a 40-25 lead with 2:48 to play in the period. The CU defense limited the Coyotes to 37.5 percent (12-of-32) from the field in the period, including 0-of-8 from the second-leading scorer in the CCC, Nicole Gall.
College of Idaho worked its way back into the game, starting with the final three minutes of the first half. After CU took the 40-25 lead, the Yotes outscored the Cavs 8-2 before the break to pull within nine points at the intermission.
The Yotes came out strong to open the second half, scoring 20 of the first 27 points in the period to take a 53-49 lead with 8:22 remaining, C of I’s first lead in the contest. After the media timeout, Danielle Clauson hit a pair of free throws to pull CU to 53-51, and following a C of I timeout, Gabi Beyer stole Gall’s inbound pass and drove the other way for a fast break layup to tie the game at 53 all.
From that point it was all Cavs. Gall missed a jumper that would have broken the tie and Rachel Scarpelli hit a pair of free throws at the other end to put CU up 55-53. Another miss by Gall would lead to a Clauson jumper and a four-point CU lead, and Gall’s turnover on the ensuing possession led to Sarah LeTourneau’s layup that put the Cavs up 59-53 with 4:29 to play.
By the time the Yotes ended the Cavaliers’ run, CU had scored 12-straight points to take a 61-53 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the contest. Gall’s layup ended the run and marked her first basket in the game after missing her first 13 shots. The Cavaliers scored seven of the final 10 points following Gall’s basket to push the final score to 68-58.
Clauson (Edmonds, Wash./Kings H.S.) finished with a game-high 16 points. Courtney May (Napavine, Wash./Napavine H.S.) nearly finished with her second triple-double of the season with 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for CU. Beyer (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale H.S.) scored 11 for the Cavs and Scarpelli (Troutdale, Ore./Reynolds H.S.) added 10 points.
Nicole Bruce scored 14 points to lead the Yotes. Tyra Rickman tallied 11 on 5-of-6 shooting and Dayna Drager added 10 in the loss. Gall finished 1-of-16 from the field, including 0-of-8 from beyond the arc, but she did contribute a team-high six assists and grabbed four rebounds.
Concordia returns to action tomorrow night when the Cavaliers host Eastern Oregon in a CCC game scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
