Concordia Defeats Corban 100-88
BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. – Courtney May scored a career-high 30 points to lead Concordia to a 100-88 Cascade Collegiate Conference victory over Corban Saturday night at Cavalier Gymnasium.
The win improves Concordia’s record to 14-5 overall, 6-1 in the conference. Corban falls to 9-8 overall, 4-3 in the CCC.
The first half proved that both teams were in for a shootout as the Cavaliers connected on 64.5 percent (20-of-31) of their shots and the Warriors scored on 55.0 percent (22-of-40) of theirs en route to a 51-51 halftime deadlock. Ten tie scores and 15 lead changes highlighted the period as neither team led by more than seven points.
Katie Steigleman scored 22 points before halftime, connecting on 9-of-12 shot attempts. May scored 15 on 6-of-6 shooting and Danielle Clauson added 10 points for CU before the break.
The first four minutes of the second period looked to be more of the same, as the teams exchanged baskets and the Cavs led 59-57 with 16:03 to play. But Concordia used a Clauson jumper and three-pointers by Megan Padilla and Rachell Scarpelli to take a 10-point lead in just 40 seconds of play, and the Cavs used that run to pull away from the Warriors.
Concordia’s lead reach 20 points at 83-63 with 9:31 left to play, and Steigleman’s fifth foul less than a minute later forced Corban’s top scorer to the bench for the remainder of the game. The Cavs pushed the lead to as many as 26 points at 93-67, and the deficit proved to be too much for a late Warriors run that pulled to within 12 in the closing seconds.
Kai Schmidt’s free throw with 1:22 remaining gave the Cavs 100 points for the first time since Dec. 16, 2007, when the Cavaliers scored 103 in a win over Walla Walla.
May (Napavine, Wash./Napavine H.S.) finished the game with 30 points on 10-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, to go with four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Clauson (Edmonds, Wash./Kings H.S.) tallied 20 points, five rebounds and five assists. Padilla (Sacramento, Calif./Christian Brothers H.S.) finished with 12 points and four steals for CU.
Steigleman scored 24 points in only 27 minutes, making 10-of-16 shots. Tess Bennett added 18 points and six rebounds for the Warriors, and Emily Tsugawa tallied 14 points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds.
Concordia returns to action Jan. 14, when the Cavaliers visit Evergreen in a CCC game scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
