PORTLAND, Ore. – Warner Pacific withstood a late comeback attempt from Northwest Christian to earn a 69-63 win over the Beacons tonight at C.C. Perry Gym.

The host Knights enjoyed a 12 point advantage (57-45) with 6:33 to play in the game, only to see NCU run off 10 straight points to close within a single basket at the 3:36 mark.

Despite the drama toward the end of the game, Warner Pacific led from start to finish and opened the game with 12 straight points before the Beacons managed a field goal. Lindsey Shearer broke the ice for NCU with a three pointer, but WP’s lead remained steady the rest of the half and was 27-19 at the break.

Warner Pacific began to slowly pull away as the second period wore on, and eventually led by as many as 15 with 13:57 to play. Two free throws from Cameryn Calhoun gave the Knights the late 12 point advantage, setting the stage for the attempted rally from Northwest Christian.

Kelsey Mattsen broke the drought for Warner Pacific with a basket and drew a foul, which gave the Knights some breathing room. Two free throws from Sheena Alexander closed the Beacons within four points (62-58) with 42 seconds remaining, but NCU would get no closer as the Knights went 6 for 6 from the line to salt the game away. Free throw shooting proved to be the difference in the game as Warner Pacific attempted 38 and made 27, while Northwest Christian made 7 of 11.

Mattsen led the way again for Warner Pacific, scoring 19 points. Layne Tucker added 17 points, while Katie Smith continued her strong play with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Lindsey Shearer led NCU with a game high 21 points including a perfect 4 of 4 from behind the arc.

With the win, Warner Pacific improves to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in CCC play. Northwest Christian falls to 5-12 and 1-6.
