Chelsea Heffner scored the game-tying goal for The C of I
After a late score by the Lady Yotes to tie the game in regulation, Alex Suggs took a pass from Taylor Culver and chipped the ball out-of-reach of keeper Lauren Davidson’s outstretched hands for the game-winning goal in the second minute of overtime, lifting The College of Idaho past Evergreen State, 2-1, at Simplot Stadium.
The hard fought victory for the Lady Yotes (4-7, 2-2 CCC) kept the C of I in the race for the Cascade Conference tournament that begins the first week in November.
The C of I rallied to erase a 1-0 Geoducks (2-7-1, 0-4) lead within the last 18 minutes of the game, taking three shots on the goal, including a right-footed blast by Culver from 15 yards out that just missed the goal wide left. After recovering a loose ball, Chelsea Heffner found the back of the net in the 86th minute on a clutch 25-yard score into the left corner of the goal to even the game at 1-1.
The visitors led the charge in the first 45 minutes, as Katie Hebein stole a bobbled ball from a C of I defender and then lined a shot into the net from just outside the box in the 38th minute, grabbing a 1-0 lead. It could have been worse for the hosts, as ESC had two near-misses midway through the period, an Anastasia Daniels drive that missed high and a shot off the right post by Rayna Murphy.
The Lady Yotes tightened the screws on their home turf by not giving up a shot in the second half, leading the shot count overall, 16-8.
The C of I closes out their two-game homestand on Monday afternoon, hosting Northwest at 1 p.m.
