SOU Volleyball Sweeps Corban

ASHLAND – The 16th-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team picked up its eighth consecutive victory as the Raiders swept Corban with set scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-15 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action Friday night at Bob Riehm Arena.
With the win, Southern Oregon improves to 14-4 overall and 11-2 in conference play. Corban falls to 10-12 overall and 4-10 in the CCC. Both teams return to action tomorrow night at 7 p.m., when the Raiders host Northwest Christian and Corban travels to Klamath Falls to face Oregon Tech.
Southern Oregon scored the first six points of the opening set and never looked back. Corban pulled within four points at 16-12, but SOU head coach Josh Rohlfing took a timeout, and the Raiders scored nine of the next 13 points to clinch the 25-16 set victory, with a kill by Natalie Scheller sealing the win.
The Raiders started strong in the second set as well, taking an early five-point lead at 9-4 on a kill by Liz Madden. Corban used a three-point streak to pull within two at 9-7, and later in the set a five-point Corban run pulled the warriors to within one at 15-14. A pair of kills by Sarah Holgen ended the CU run, and the Raiders eventually regained their five-point advantage at 23-18 and again at 24-19. Corban scored a pair late to make it 24-21, but Rebecca Shafer’s attack error ended the set and put SOU up 2-0 in the match.
The final set began with another dominant SOU start, with the Raiders building a 12-2 lead and never allowing Corban within five points of the leaders. A Holgen attack error gave Corban its best chance late, pulling the Warriors to 19-14, but Southern Oregon closed with a 6-1 run to close out the 25-15 set victory.
Holgen led both teams with 13 kills and tied Becky Johnstone for the match-high total with 13 digs. Angela Spieker and Caryn Westrick combined for 36 assists, while Megan Dees picked up 14 assists for the Warriors.
