Sullivan Leads Corban Offense Over Evergreen
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Sophomore Audrey Sullivan netted two goals as Corban's women's soccer team prevailed over The Evergreen State College, 4-2, in Monday's contest on Warrior Field.
Evergreen came out of the gate quickly, as the Geoducks registered three shots on goal in the first seven minutes. Corban fended off Evergreen's early surge, but the Geoducks broke through for the game's first goal in the 11th minute, as Evergreen's Anastasia Daniels eluded through Corban's defense and beat freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mendenhall with a shot to the lower left corner from 5 yards.
The two teams would trade shots for the next twenty minutes before Corban evened the score in the 31st minute when junior Emily Tsugawa took a crossing pass from sophomore Emily Boudreau and fired a nifty one-timer that found the upper left corner for the equalizer. The Warriors would capture their first lead late in the first half as Sullivan headed home a free kick from freshman Sydney Dreves in the 40th minute to give Corban a 2-1 advantage which the Warriors would take into halftime. Corban out-shot Evergreen 10-5 in the first period as both sides pushed the pace throughout the first 45 minutes.
Sophomore Alexis Beattie took over net minding duties for the Warriors to begin the second half, as neither team was able to find the net early in the period. The score remained 2-1 until the 67th minute, when Evergreen's Daniels took advantage of Corban's defense to break through and put the ball in the back of an open net for her second goal of the match. The Geoduck equalizer sparked a spirited sequence of events, as Evergreen's head coach was given a red card 33 seconds later for dissention, followed by Warrior sophomore Tera McDonough finding the back of the net in the 68th minutes with a one-timer off a cross from junior Brittney Bowman. The first goal of the season for McDonough gave Corban a 3-2 lead and proved to be the game-winner.
Following McDonough's goal, Evergreen pressed forward in hopes of forging a third tie, but Corban held the Geoducks at bay as Beattie made two challenging saves in the next two minutes to protect the Warrior lead. Corban would go on to add one more score in the 73rd minute, as Tsugawa and Sullivan teamed up on a give-and-go breakaway that led to Sullivan's second goal of the day on a rolling shot to the bottom right corner assisted by Tsugawa. Evergreen's last scoring threat was stopped in the 77th minute, as Beattie snagged Geoduck Brianna Speed's shot to preserve Corban's 4-2 advantage. The Warriors out-shot Evergreen 10-7 in the final period as Corban collected its first Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season win this season.
Evergreen was anchored by goalkeeper Lauren Davidson, who made five saves while allowing four goals in 90 minutes between the pipes for the Geoducks. Mendenhall and Beattie shared net minding duties once again, as Mendenhall made three saves while allowing one goal during the first half, while Beattie also recorded three saves and one goal allowed over the final 45 minutes.
With the win, the Warriors improve to 6-4-0 on the season, with a 1-1-0 mark in CCC action. Meanwhile, Evergreen moves to 2-5-1 overall, with a 0-2-0 record in CCC play. Corban returns to action at home this Saturday, as the Warriors host Southern Oregon University in a match scheduled to kick off at 3:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
