CU senior Jackie Hendrickson scored the game-winning goal against the Knights on Saturday.
Cavs Clinch 12th Straight CCC Crown
STATS - Concordia vs. Warner Pacific
PORTLAND, Ore.—With a 2-0 win over Warner Pacific on Saturday, the No. 3 Concordia women’s soccer team clinched at the very least a share of their 12th straight CCC title and the No. 1 seed in the CCC tournament in the team’s final regular-season match.
As No. 1, Concordia (13-4-1, 8-1-0 CCC) will host the yet-to-be-determined No. 4 team in the conference on Saturday, Nov. 5. If the Cavs win that, they would host the CCC championship the following Saturday, Nov. 12. Southern Oregon has claimed the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will play for a share of the regular-season crown against Northwest on Monday.
Concordia’s opponent could still be either Northwest, Corban or The College of Idaho. All those teams wrap up their own regular seasons on Monday, Oct. 31, after which Concordia will know their opponent for Saturday, Nov. 5. The time of the match will also be determined later in the week.
On this Saturday, though, Concordia controlled the ball through most of the match, outshooting Warner Pacific 27-to-1 on the senior day for CU’s Tahlia O’Loughlin, Brittany Orr and Jackie Hendrickson.
One of those seniors, Hendrickson, even opened the scoring for the Cavs with a goal in the 9th minute. In addition to scoring, Hendrickson started the play too, passing the ball up the middle to forward Alex Thomas who then followed with a hard shot on the Warner Pacific goal from the left side. Goalkeeper Nikita Rivera managed to punch the ball out to the right, but that’s exactly where Hendrickson was, charging towards the goal, and the senior rocketed a shot into the net from five yards out.
Warner Pacific (4-6-1, 3-6-0 CCC) nearly got an equalizer in the 37th minute, though, when the team earned a corner kick. The Knights’ Sam Goldammer took the kick and sent in a good ball that found a scrum of players fighting for possession in the box. The Knights’ Samantha Horvath eventually found the ball and got a good look at a header, but the shot sailed high and Concordia held on to the lead.
Then in the second half, the Cavs continued to possess the ball well, limiting Warner Pacific’s chances, while continuing to pour on shots of their own. The Knights’ goalkeeper Nikita Rivera and her defense did well to keep Concordia out of the net, though, as the Cavaliers could not find a second goal.
However, in the 81st minute, Concordia finally got its second score as Kaylynn Winwood headed home a shot following a free kick from 35 yards out. While the play started with a free kick, though, Winwood was the third Cavalier to touch the ball following the boot as both Hendrickson and freshman Ashley Ames flicked the ball further into the box with headers of their own.
The goal capped the night’s scoring, while the assist for Hendrickson capped a great performance for the midfielder on senior day as she recorded three points (one goal, one assist) in the win.
In goal, Concordia goalkeeper Tori Talbutt posted her seventh shutout of the season and the team’s tenth, while Rivera totaled seven saves in the losing effort for the Knights.
The loss also wrapped up the season for the Knights, while Concordia now enters the postseason with at least a share of the CCC regular-season title.
