PORTLAND, Ore.—The No. 5 Concordia women’s soccer team squeaked out a 1-0 win against College of Idaho on Saturday.
However, Concordia controlled the ball for most of the game as the Cavs posted big advantages in shots (27-to-3), shots on goal (13-to-1) and corners (17-to-1).
Still, the Cavs had to wait until the second half for their one score, which came off one of the corners in the 66th minute. Freshman Erin Huisingh both earned and took the corner for the Cavs and sent the ball high into the box to forward Alex Thomas. Thomas then launched a long header from 20 yards out that found the upper right of the net. The score gave the Cavs all they’d need and released some pent up energy after being held scoreless to that point.
“It turned into one of those games where we just had to keep plugging away at it, keep creating chances and hope eventually we’d find the net,” said CU Head Coach Grant Landy.
The College of Idaho defense didn’t help the Cavs intentions as the Yotes fought off several Concordia attacks. C of I goalkeeper Aimee Pierson played well, in particular, saving 12 CU shots, including eight in the second half alone.
“C of I is an athletic team and they schemed well, putting several people back to help the goalkeeper who had a great night, herself,” said Landy.
Only a barrage of offense in the first twenty minutes of the second half from the Cavs prevented a scoreless tie. In that time, CU put up eight shots, four of which were on goal, and forced five corners, the last of which gave the Cavs the game-winner.
In goal, while Pierson saved 12 in the losing effort, Concordia goalkeeper Tori Talbutt saved one herself and recorded her fifth shutout of the season.
CU’s defense also helped Talbutt as they constantly kept the ball up away from the Concordia goal.
“Our defense did a great job limiting them to only one corner and three shots as well as playing the ball up into the offensive attack,” said Landy. “In the second half, we were sending everybody we could to help create that one goal.”
With the win, Concordia improves to 8-3-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the CCC to remain tied for first. The College of Idaho, meanwhile, drops to 3-6-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the CCC and will next face Warner Pacific on Monday. Concordia also returns to action on Monday, hosting Eastern Oregon at 1 p.m.
