Northwest Pulls Away to 99-69 Victory Over Concordia

PORTLAND, Ore. – Northwest led 45-30 at halftime and opened the second half on a 20-7 run as the Eagles pulled away to defeat Concordia University 99-69 in Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s basketball action Friday night at Cavalier Gymnasium.

The loss drops Concordia’s record to 10-16 overall, 4-11 in the CCC. Northwest improves to 19-5 overall and 11-4 in conference play.

The Eagles shot 50.0 percent (18-of-36) from the field in the first half in building a 15-point halftime advantage. Northwest dominated down low early in the contest, outrebounding the Cavaliers 22-12 in the first period. Tyson Christie scored all of his 15 points in the first half for Northwest.

After the intermission, Northwest put the game away. The Eagles scored 20 of the first 27 points to stretch their lead to 28 at 65-37 with 13:19 left to play. Following a three-point play by Kevan West, Northwest used a 14-3 run to go up by 36 with 8:51 remaining. Concordia made four three-pointers in a three-minute stretch to prevent Northwest’s lead from growing further, as the Eagles closed out the 99-39 win.

Northwest shot 57.5 percent (23-of-40) in the second half and dished out 11 assists to only three turnovers in the period. The Eagles finished the contest with a 53.9 shooting mark (41-of-76), while limiting the Cavaliers to 39.3 percent (22-of-56).

Six NU players reached double-figures in the scoring column, highlighted by Jordan Call’s 18 points. Greg Peters tallied 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and added eight rebounds. Christie added his 15 points, Rich Skillman and Daley Landon each finished with 11 and Greg George totaled 10 for the Eagles.

Adam Herman led all scorers with 20 points, but the Eagles’ low post presence limited the NAIA’s leading shooter to 6-of-14 from the field. Drew Preuninger hit five three-pointers in eight attempts to tally 15 total, the only other CU player to reach double-digits.

Concordia returns to action tomorrow night, when the Cavaliers host Evergreen State at 7:30 p.m. in CU’s final home contest of the 2010-11 regular season.
