PORTLAND, Ore.—Holding a 2-0 lead at intermission, a pair of goals from sophomore Septi Danciu in the second half boosted Concordia to a 4-0 win over Trinity International University in non-conference men’s soccer action at Delta Park on Saturday.

The match represented the 2011 opener for Concordia, the NAIA’s No. 21-ranked team according to the coaches’ preseason poll. TUI fell to 0-2 on the year after a West Coast trip against CU and fellow CCC member Corban University.

“The team rolled up the sleeves and went at it strong,” CU head coach Dan Birkey said. “They were able to show positive, attacking play and created loads of chances while still being stubborn on the back line.”

Sophomore Daniel Anderson, a newcomer to the program after a year at CSU Stanislaus, gave the Cavaliers an early lead with a finish on the right side after receiving a feed from Evan Denmark in the 6th minute.

In the 29th minute, Nick Cook posted the first of his two assists on the day with a give to senior Facundo Dipascuale. Taking the pass from the left side, Dipascuale darted the ball low and to the right of Trojan goalkeeper Mitch Wiseman to double the team’s lead.

After being outshot 18-to-1 in the first half, TIU managed four attempts in the second 45 minutes, including two that were corralled by keeper Scott Gross, but the Trojans would be denied a goal as Gross paired up with starting keeper Humberto Soriano for the clean sheet.

With the foot of Danciu, Concordia once again doubled its advantage In the second half. Danciu struck from 18 yards out in the 62nd minute to make it a3-0 contest and returned with a 10-yard blast in the 76th minute to put the game away.

“Septi and (Jared) Brace really were our best combination up top,” Birkey said. “Septi in particular gave us the necessary concentration and positioning in the final 18 yards. Overall, the players will not be satisfied with their composure in the finishing part of today’s game. I would be concerned if we had not produced chances to score, but we did. This contest will help give us our worksheet for growth and I know this team wants to accomplish more.”

Dipascuale assisted Danciu’s first score while Cook teamed up with Matt Caniglia for the fourth and final tally.

In addition to the 28-to-5 advantage in overall shots, CU accumulated eight corner kicks to zero for its opposition.

“I thought (Evan) Denmark, (Nick) Cook and (Tanner) French really managed to handle the runs and crosses that were presented,” Birkey said. “We still need work in communication and playing out under possession, but that is true for all of the side. We will get more interesting bouts of passing and movement as we spend time together.”

Concordia returns to action on August 28 when it hosts Trinity Western University (B.C.) at Delta Park. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
