Point Loma Spoils Northwest's Season Opener
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Point Loma Nazarene's Tina Shoffeitt's goal in the 68th minute of play was all the Sea Lions needed to defeat Northwest U. this afternoon as the Eagles opened their 2011 season.
Shoffeitt scored her goal from 10 yards out on a crossing pass from teammate Katie Pedlove who earned the assist on the play.
NU's Chelsea Pennington's shot at 84:09 went wide as time would run out on the Eagles.
Point Loma outshot NU 10-4 as the Eagles' (0-1) Jordan Holmes had 5 saves on the day in goal. PLNU's Tiffany Kracy had two saves earning the shut out for the Sea Lions (1-0).
Chelsea Pennington had 2 of the Eagles' shots (one shot on goal and teammate Kirstie Walton had one shot on goal.
"We battled hard," commented Erin Redwine, women's head coach. "PLN is a good team and we came to California to be challenged and prepare for a competitive season." Redwine continued, "We struggled finding the last ball in to finish today, but came up big defensively. Chelsi Pennington and Jordan Holmes played outstanding and assumed a great deal of leadership for us."
Northwest U. will remain in southern California as they take on Concordia University (Irvine), ranked 20th in the NAIA, on Wednesday, August 23 at 3 p.m.
