STATS - Concordia vs. College of Idaho

PORTLAND, Ore.—For the second consecutive day, the Concordia men’s soccer team used a second-half scoring spree to put away a conference foe, defeating The College of Idaho 4-0 on Saturday.

The win completed a conference sweep to improve the Cavs’ overall record to 8-0-0 and 4-0-0 in the CCC. C of I fell to 2-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in league play.

“I was especially pleased with the passing and movement this afternoon. It’s an area we have emphasized in training and to come out and get that right was encouraging,” CU head coach Dan Birkey said. “The goals eventually followed but completed passing ratio and smart off the ball movement were the ingredients.”

In what’s becoming a regular thing, senior co-captain Facundo Dipascuale opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the 16th minute after a foul in the box. Dipascuale sent the penalty into the right bottom corner of the net where College of Idaho keeper Aaron Reynolds guessed right, diving that way, but fortunately for the Cavs, the shot went under Reynolds and bounced off the right post and into the net.

That would be it for the Cavs for a while though, despite a 15-to-3 advantage in shots in the first half.

Waiting until the 72nd minute to strike again, the Cavs were able to string three goals in a four-minute stretch to put the match out of reach.

The first goal came when Nate Boatright put in a header off a corner from sophomore forward Septi Danciu. Then only 100 seconds later, Danciu scored a goal of his own off an assist from Dipascuale.

Now up 3-0, Dipascuale anchored the lead with a highlight-reel assist to freshman midfielder Tanner Williams for the game’s final score. Williams led the attack on the final goal, passing up to Dipascuale in the middle of the field for a quick give-and-go. Dipascuale then surprised the defense with a quick no-look, behind the back touch back to Williams who then shot the ball in from 15 yards.

Earlier in the match, C of I had a couple of good looks for an equalizer when the match was still just 1-0. The first came in the 21st minute when the Coyotes’ Parker Waddell blasted a ball along the ground, headed for the left corner of the net. Only a diving grab from CU goalkeeper Humberto Soriano prevented the score. Waddell gave the Cavs a scare again in the 70th minute with another hard shot on goal from 25 yards. Once again, though, a diving Soriano was just able to corral the ball, maintaining the shutout.

“Idaho played very honest today. They worked hard at getting behind the ball and made it difficult for us with their work rate,” Birkey said. “We needed to match that and add a spoonful of quality to get the goals today and we did.

In goal, Soriano saved five shots in all to record his third and the team’s sixth shutout of the season. For C of I, Reynolds totaled six saves in the losing effort.

“We had big games this weekend from (Nick) Cook, (Matt) Caniglia, (Matt) Eronemo and (Evan) Denmark. Jared Brace got back into the scheme and Facundo was in form,” CU Head Coach Dan Birkey said. “Right now if you look at the number of players that are contributing, it’s very positive. The guys are taking each conference games very seriously.  There is no overlooking or underestimating anybody.”

The Coyotes return home for their next match against Northwest Christian on Wednesday, Sept. 28. The Cavs also return to action on the 28th, but travel to Kirkland, Wash. to face Northwest University at 3:30 p.m.
