STATS - Concordia vs. Southern Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore.—Taking just their second lead of the game with under nine minutes to play, Southern Oregon completed a second-half comeback with a 64-60 road win on Saturday night.

With the win, SOU improved to 13-11 on the season and 4-9 in CCC play while Concordia fell to 7-16 overall and 3-9 in league action. With six games remaining, the two teams hold seventh and eighth place in the conference standings, the final two qualifying spots for the postseason tournament.

After trailing through the first two minutes, the Cavaliers mounted a 21-6 dash to stake a lead of a dozen points with the score 22-10 at the 11:16 mark. Senior Rachel Scarpelli led the charge with 10 quick points out of the gate.

The Cavs held a double-digit lead as late as 4:45 left in the half before the Raiders chipped back into the mix. The SOU trio of Cassandra Tiggert, RaTanya Newsome and Molly Doran combined for 18 of the team’s 24 first-half points to bring the visiting team back to within three in the final minute before the break.

CU’s Grace Cappleman stopped the barrage with a jumper for the final bucket of the half to give CU the 29-24 lead at the break despite being outshot 29 percent to 34.8 percent for SOU. The Cavs relied on 16 points off of turnovers in the first half while the Raiders benefited from 14 points in the paint to climb back from the early deficit.

Early in the second, Molly Doran connected on a 3-pointer to pull the Raiders to within a single point, but CU would maintain the lead with responses with jump shots from Scarpelli, Courtney May and Brittney Yates.

The Cavs generated their biggest lead of the half, a mere six points, after a Kayla Bustos free throw with 10:51 remaining. From there, the Raiders compiled their most sustained run, creating a 12-2 onslaught powered by nine points and a key steal from Angelica Cahee. Converting the free throw following the play, Cahee gave the Raiders its first lead of the second half on a successful layup with 8:56 to go.

Tiggert controlled the final minutes of the game to keep the Cavs at bay, scoring 13 of her team-high 23 in the final frame. A pair of free throws by Newsome gave SOU a seven-point spread with 21 seconds remaining before a long three by May settled the scoring for the night.

Cahee followed Toggert with 14 points while Newsome added 11 to give SOU three players in double figures. Tiggert also claimed a game-high 15 rebounds to help the Raiders to a 44-to-36 advantage in overall rebounds.

Hitting 4-of-9 from long range, Scarpelli finished with 24 points to lead the Cavs while May tallied 10 points and five rebounds.
SOU shot an even 50 percent in the second half to up its rate to 42.9 percent for the game while CU shot slightly better from the field in the second half to end with 30.6 shooting percentage.

SOU was forced into 19 turnovers while CU committed just 10 offenses on the night.

The Raiders will stay on the road next week to face Oregon Tech while Concordia will head north to face Northwest and Evergreen State.
