Southern Oregon Sweeps Corban in Three Sets

SALEM, Ore. – Southern Oregon used a balance offensive and defensive attack en route to defeating Corban in three sets, 3-0 (23-25, 24-26, 17-25), Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
With tonight's result, Southern Oregon improves to 15-8 overall and 11-2 in league matches. Meanwhile, Corban drops to 3-17 overall and 1-13 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
Southern Oregon was led offensively by Mona Goudarzian with 10 kills, while Haley Kasler and Liz Madden added eight and seven kills, respectively. The setting duo of Caryn Westrick and Angela Spieker combined to hand out 31 assists with Westrick dishing out a team-high 17, while Renee Yomtob anchored SOU's defense with 13 digs to go along with a five-block performance by Nikki Keller.
Corban's Chandra Teague led all players with 15 kills, while adding 12 digs to go along with a six-kill effort by Courtney Mulford. Setter Katherine Salness guided the Warriors' offense with a match-high 29 assists to go along with a match-high 14 digs by libero Kiersten Hilt. At the net, Jenny Harman and Olivia Shropshire tallied a team-high three blocks each to go along with single service aces from Teague, Salness, and Hannah Flores.
The opening set would see Southern Oregon jump out to a quick 6-1 lead before Corban used a 16-11 run to tie the score a t17-17 on a hitting error by the visiting Raiders. SOU would use a 6-3 run to pull ahead by three points (23-20) on a Warrior hitting error before Corban scored two straight points to pull within one at 23-22. A kill by SOU's Madden followed by a Teague kill would give the visiting Raiders set-point, as Madden ended the opening affair with her third kill for the two-point victory (25-23).
Set #2 would see a back-and-forth battle over the opening 34 combined point until Corban broke a 17-17 tie with a 4-1 run that resulted in a 21-18 lead on another kill by Teague. Southern Oregon would battle back to tie the score at 21-21 thanks to a kill by Kasler before both teams traded points until Mulford tie the score for the 12th and final time (24-24) via a kill. Southern Oregon would score the final two points on a kill by Madden followed by a Goudarzian spike that ended the middle set (26-24).
The third and final set would see a deeper Southern Oregon squad begin to show its dominance, as the visiting Raiders jumped out to a 10-5 lead on a combo block by Jordan Crossley and Keller. SOU would continue to apply the pressure, as the Raiders extended their lead to as many as seven points (17-10) on a Brookelynn Cole service ace. Southern Oregon and Corban would trade points back-and-forth for the remainder of the match, but SOU's lead was too much as the Raiders cruised to a 25-17 victory with the match concluding on a Sam Boehnke kill.
Both teams will return to action tomorrow – Saturday, October 20th – with Corban hosting Oregon Tech in its final home match of the year. Southern Oregon will travel south to Eugene to take on Northwest Christian. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
