KLAMATH FALLS – Southern Oregon used a 21-0 second-half run to pull away as the Raider women defeated California Maritime 104-53 Friday afternoon at the Midland Empire Insurance Classic.
Southern Oregon improves to 4-0 with the win, while California Maritime falls to 4-0 with the loss. The Raiders are now averaging 97.2 points per game and have an average scoring margin of 46.5 points in four wins this season. They will return to action Friday, facing William Jessup at 1 p.m. at Danny Miles Court.
Melissa Sweat scored a game-high 23 points, while Angelica Cahee added 18 and Haley Newell tallied 16 points and seven assists. Tatjana Pitts led California Maritime with 15 points, while Jordan Mootz added 14.
Southern Oregon shot 53.7 percent (36-of-67) in the game and out-rebounded the Keelhaulers 44-32 in the win. The final score was nearly identical to the 2012 season opener two weeks ago, when SOU defeated Maritime 101-53.
The Raiders led throughout the game, taking their first double-digit lead at 25-14 following a Kiara Moore jumper with 11:04 to play in the first half. They stretched their lead to as many as 25 points in the period before a late three-pointer by Gabrielle Davis made it a 55-34 game at the break.
California Maritime came out strong early in the second half, outscoring SOU 13-3 in the first five minutes to pull within 11 points at 58-47. A three-pointer by Newell ended the Keelhaulers’ run and began a 21-point streak over the next six minutes that pushed SOU’s lead to 79-47. While a pair of Javier Brantley free throws ended the streak, SOU ended the game on a 25-4 run to reach the final score of 104-53.
