Senior Shayla Fetters helped lead No. 10-ranked Corban to the CCC Tournament semifinals thanks to a game-high 16 points Tuesday against Evergreen.

SALEM, Ore. – Senior Shayla Fetters and junior Emily Tsugawa combined to score 29 points, as Corban's top-seeded women's basketball team advanced to the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament semifinals with a 60-48 win over the Geoducks of Evergreen Tuesday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
With the win, Corban improves to 22-6 overall and Evergreen has its season come to an end with a win-loss record of 7-21.
Fetters led all players with a game-high tying 16 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field, while also hitting 5-of-7 free throws. Meanwhile, Tsugawa was the only other Warrior in double figures with 13 points hitting 4-of-6 from the field and 4-of-8 at the free throw line. Freshman Tara Vanweerdhuizen pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to go along with a game-high six blocked shots, while fellow freshman Elizabeth Downs handed out a game-high tying six assists off the Warriors' bench.
Over the opening five minutes, both teams would battle back and forth resulting in a 6-6 tie on a Tsugawa jumper at the 14:51 mark. Corban would then use a 12-6 run over a span of seven-plus minutes to grab a six-point lead (18-12) on a Fetters' lay-in with 7:07 remaining. The upset-minded Geoducks would then go on an 8-2 run over the next four minutes to tie the game for the fourth time at 20-20 thanks to a fast-break lay-in by Danielle Swain at the 3:08 mark. Neither team would score again until the final seconds, as Tsugawa knocked down the Warriors' only three-pointer of the half that handed Corban a slim three-point lead (23-20) at halftime.
Corban would come out of the locker room on a tear increasing its lead to nine points (35-26) over the opening six-plus minutes with the final points coming via an old-fashion three-point play by Fetters with 13:36 on the clock. The Warriors would continue to apply the offensive pressure increasing their lead to a game-high 14 points (48-34) on a jumper in the paint by junior Tess Bennett with 6:07 left. Evergreen would attempt a comeback over the next two minutes, but the Geoducks could only get within nine points (50-41) on a three-pointer by Sami Clark with just over four minutes remaining. Down the stretch, Corban would hit timely free throws with the Warriors going 6-of-8 at the line over the game's final four minutes en route to securing a hard-fought 12-point victory (60-58).
Swain would lead Evergreen in scoring with a game-high tying 16 points, while also grabbing a team-best eight rebounds. Clark was the only other Geoduck in double figures with 11 points, while Jessica Edge added nine points and a game-high tying six assists.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 22-for-44 (50.0%) from the field to go along with a 2-for-12 (16.7%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 14-for-22 (63.6%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Evergreen was 20-for-68 (29.4%) from the field, 3-for-13 (23.1%) from long distance, and 5-for-12 (41.7%) at the charity stripe.
With all of the top seeds winning their opening round games Tuesday, Corban will host No. 4-seeded Warner Pacific on Friday, February 24th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem. Meanwhile, No. 2-seed The College of Idaho will welcome fellow I-84 Cup counterpart and No. 3-seeded Eastern Oregon to the J.A. Albertson Activities Center for a 7:00 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time) contest on Friday as well.
