CALDWELL, Idaho – The Eastern Oregon University volleyball team picked up a three-set victory over William Jessup (Calif.), at The College of Idaho Classic Saturday.
The Mountaineers (2-1) finished the classic winning seven of the 10 sets they played, with two sweeps, including one over No. 8 Lewis-Clark State Friday.
Saturday, Stefani Sorensen and Irene Walters both had seven kills. In just her third collegiate match, Jessica Perron had a match-high 20 assists. Bobbi Sumpter finished with 11 assists. Entering the match, Kaitlyn Duncan led the NAIA in digs per set (5.0). Saturday, she finished with a match-high 11 digs. Casey Loper had three blocks.
William Jessup took an early lead, 4-3, in the opening set before Eastern went on a 6-1 run capped by solid serves from Jessica Perron. A kill by Alisha Crane gave the Mountaineers their largest lead of the set, 24-15.
In set two, EOU jumped out to 4-1 and 7-3 leads before the Warriors went on a 4-0 run to even the set. Eastern regained the momentum and made a decisive run stretching the lead to 17-11. The Mountaineers would close out the set and win, 25-17.
The Warriors got out to a 3-1 lead in the third set, but Eastern Oregon then went on a 6-1 run. EOU continued to build its lead and pulled away with a 25-14 victory.
Sara Hickenbottom led the Warriors (0-2) with seven kills. Elaina Murphy had 11 assists and five service aces. Molly Collins had 10 digs.
Fourteen Mountaineers played during the match, with Karly Stack remaining out with an injury. Eastern had a .354 attack percentage, while William Jessup was at .099. EOU had a 36-25 kill advantage.
Eastern Oregon faces Montana Western Thursday in the Red Lion Frontier Conference/Cascade Conference Challenge in Spokane, Wash. The match begins at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Live stats will be available on EOUSports.com.
