Cavs Dominate Trinity Lutheran, Win 1-0
BOX SCORE
ASHLAND, Ore.—The No. 2-ranked Concordia women’s soccer team dominated its match against Trinity Lutheran en route to a 1-0 victory on Saturday.
Concordia (2-0) recorded a 24-5 advantage in shots against the Trinity Lutheran Eagles (0-2), which included a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.
The Cavs also recorded a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks, while a corner kick at the end of the first half led to the Cavs’ game-winner.
Freshman Alicia Alarcon-Evans scored the game-winning goal in the 45th minute off assists from Hayley Hayes and McKayla Madison.
Madison fielded Hayes’ corner to start the play, and passed it to Alarcon-Evans to the left. Alarcon-Evans finished the play from there, giving the Cavs all the offense they’d need in the match.
Alarcon-Evans’ goal and Madison’s assist came in just their second matches as Cavaliers.
The Cavalier defense had no problem preserving the lead either, as the Eagles had only two shots in the second half, neither of which were on goal.
The Eagles got their lone shot on goal early in the match when Alex Chick found room for a shot in 8th minute. CU goalkeeper Tori Talbutt saved the ball, however, and the Cavaliers’ offense controlled the ball from there.
Concordia’s offensive dominance came from a wide range of players, as 10 different Cavaliers recorded shots in the match. That group included three freshmen in Alarcon-Evans, Ariel Kanable and Alle MacLeod.
Talbutt, meanwhile, played all 90 minutes in goal for the Cavs, recording her first shutout of the season.
The Cavaliers return to action when they host the Cavalier Tournament on Friday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 2. No. 3-ranked Lindsey Wilson, No. 5-ranked Embry Riddle and No. 12 Hastings will all compete at the tournament. Concordia will open play at the tournament against Hastings on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m.
