Cavs Ninth after First Day of WWU Invite

BELLINGHAM, Wash.—Concordia fell three places in the team standings with a 302 in the second round of action at the Western Washington University Viking Invitational.
Starting with
Jed Dalton's 2-over 74, the four scorers for the Cavaliers posted scores one swing apart.
Kolton Kyne fired a 75,
Josh Vizcaino a 76 and
Tanner Maahs a 77.
Dalton (70-74—144) will enter the third and final round tied for ninth place overall while Kyne (73-75—148) is one shot back of cracking the top 20. With back-to-back 76s, Vizcaino (76-76—152) ended the day tied for 38th while Maahs finished in 43rd place with consecutive 77s.
Western Washington (284-284—568) continues to hold the team lead with identical 4-under 284 team scores. The Vikings will enter Tuesday's final round with a 10-stroke advantage over Hawaii-Hilo (296-282—578) after the Vulcans carded a tournament-low 6-under 282 in the evening round of play.
British Columbia (293-287—580) cut six strokes off their opening round to rest in third place with Arizona's Grand Canyon (296-288—584) close behind.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – With 10 of the 12 teams in attendance representing NCAA DII programs, the Concordia men’s golf team ended the first day of action in sixth place at Western Washington University’s 41st Annual Viking Invitational.
Concordia fired an 8-over 296 over the 6,561-yard course at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club. The host Vikings, ranked No. 9 in NCAA II, was the lone team under par with a 4-under 284. Dixie State (Utah) holds a one-shot lead over Saint Martin’s (Wash.) for second place with a 2-over 290.
The University of British Columbia, the third-place finisher at the 2012 NAIA National Championships, holds fourth place in the team standings, three shots ahead of the Cavaliers.
In all, exactly half of the team field resides wither in the NCAA DII top 25 or received votes towards the national poll. Concordia shares sixth place with Grand Canyon (Ariz.) and Hawaii-Hilo. Grand Canyon was ranked No. 19 in the most recent DII poll.
Just three strokes away from the overall lead out of 63 competitors, senior Jed Dalton paced the Cavaliers with a 2-under 70. WWU’s Mark Strickland fired a 5-under to enter the second day with a two-stroke edge over St. Martin’s Brandon Moore (69). Along with five others that shared third place with Dalton, Cal Baptist’s Micah Machado returned a 1-under 71 to give the field nine players under par for the day.
Tied for 14th place, freshman Kolton Kyne entered the clubhouse one swing away from par with a 73 for the team’s second lowest score. Josh Vizcaino and Tanner Maahs registered a 76 and a 77 for CU’s final two scorers.
Vizcaino will start Tuesday’s round in a seven-way tie for 32nd place while Maahs holds 39th place with three other individuals. Jess Wingett carded a 6-over 78 as the team’s final entry.
