Oregon Tech Starts Slow, Sweeps Past Corban
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech overcame a sluggish start in set 1, but overpowered Corban University in the final 2 sets of tonight’s Cascade Conference volleyball match, as the Owls swept past the visiting Warriors, 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-12) tonight at Danny Miles Court.
Oregon Tech improved to 10-11 overall and 2-6 in the conference standings. Corban fell to 3-11 and 1-7 in conference play.
Trailing 2-6 to Corban, Oregon Tech used kills by Krista Galloway and Kara Young, along with four CU miscues, to take an 8-6 lead. Corban, behind a solid serving effort from Karisa Legg would next tie, recapture and then double-up the Owls 8-16. CU looked to run away with a win in the opener after leading 12-21, but the Owls had other ideas.
Kristen Walters would record the next point for Tech and took serve. After back-to-back attack errors by the Warriors, Walters mixed in an ace, while a Young kill pulled the Owls to within four, 17-21. Corban then hurt themselves with three-straight hitting errors as Tech trailed 20-21.
Corban’s Chandra Teague made it a two point advantage, while an ensuing Owl error gave the Warriors a 23-20 advantage. Again Corban hurt their own cause with three-straight hitting errors, while Tech’s Young tied the set at 24-24 with her fourth kill of the opening set. Young would add kill five, while taking set 1 with CU’s 15
th miscue.
In set 2 the Owls jumped up 6-0, eventually taking a 15-7 lead. Corban closed to within six points, 16-10, before Tech took a commanding 23-11 lead after stringing together five in a row. The Owls would move up 2-0 after holding off a Warrior comeback winning set 2 by a 25-16 score.
It was all Owls in set 3, as the home team took a quick 10-1 lead before retaining the nine point edge, 18-9, after teams traded point’s midway through the final frame. The Owls would move out to a 22-9 advantage eventually winning the set by the same margin 25-12.
Kara Young led the way for Tech with a double-double 13 kills and 12 digs, with Kristin Walters adding 8 kills in tonight’s win. Aurora Penoyar finished with 6 kills, 1 solo block and 5 block assists. Tech libero Marie Baumann recorded a match-high 16 digs with setter Kayleigh Whelchel finishing with 23 assists and 6 digs.
For Corban Chandra Teague led the Warrior offense with 7 kills to go with 9 digs with Courtney Mulford adding 6 kills in the loss. Hannah Flores anchored the CU defense with 13 digs, while setter Katherine Salness adding 19 assists.
