Big Second Half Carries SOU Women to 74-62 Win Over Evergreen

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon used a 19-2 run early in the second half to take a double-digit lead over visiting Evergreen, and the Raiders coasted to a 74-62 Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball victory Friday night at Bob Riehm Arena.
Southern Oregon improves to 14-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while Evergreen falls to 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the CCC. Both teams return to action Saturday, with the Raiders hosting Northwest and Evergreen taking on Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls at 5:30 p.m.
Alexi Smith led all scorers with 20 points in the win, while Allison Gida added 14 points and Carly Meister finished with 10. Southern Oregon shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58) while limiting Evergreen to 39.7 percent shooting (25-of-63) and outrebounded the Geoducks 42-33. Danielle Swain led Evergreen with 18 points, with Jessica Denmon tallying 13 and Sammi Clark adding 12.
The first half featured three tie scores and 12 lead changes before the Raiders scored eight straight points late to take their biggest lead to that point at 32-24. Evergreen scored the final four points of the half to pull within 32-28 at halftime.
A Smith layup two minutes into the second period sparked a 19-2 SOU run that gave the Raiders their first double-digit lead of the game and stretched their advantage to 20 points with 12:01 to play. The Raiders held a comfortable lead through the rest of the contest, with Evergreen closing the game on a 12-2 run to reach the final score of 74-62.
