Corban Avoids Season Sweep With Win Over Geoducks of Evergreen

SALEM, Ore. – Three Warriors scored in double figures led by Tess Bennett with 14 points, as Corban University avoided a season sweep by The Evergreen State College with a 73-63 victory Saturday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
With tonight's win, Corban earned its first weekend sweep in conference play improving to 6-15 overall and 3-8 in Cascade Collegiate Conference games. Meanwhile, Evergreen falls to 5-10 overall and 4-7 in league contests.
Along with Bennett, Tara Vanweerdhuizen added 13 points, a game-high 14 rebounds, and a game-high seven blocked shots. Haley Holboke came off the Warriors' bench to score 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, while Emily Tsugawa had the best all-around game coming within a few points and a couple of rebounds of her first career triple-double with eight points, seven rebounds, and a game-high 11 assists.
A back-and-forth game in the beginning would turn into an eight-point lead (18-10) for Corban on an old-fasion three-point play by Katherine Salness with 10:21 on the clock. Evergreen would battle back to tie the game at 18-all on a pair of free throws by Jessica Edge before Corban used an 11-2 run over a span of four-plus minutes to go ahead 31-20 on a three-point play by Alison Evans with 2:18 remaining. Corban would settle for a nine-point lead (33-24) at halftime after Vanweerdhuizen scored the final points via a lay-in with 10 seconds left.
The second half would begin with Corban jumping out to a 12-point lead (39-27) thanks to an opening 6-3 run that concluded on a Bennett jumper with 16:12 left. Evergreen would get within seven points (43-36) before the host Warriors extended their lead back to double digits (56-43) thanks to a 13-7 run that ended on a fast-break three-point play by Holboke with 7:15 on the clock. Timely fouling by Evergreen and pour free throw shooting by Corban would bring the Geoducks within seven points on five different occasions in the final two-plus minutes with the last one happening at the 44-second mark, as Corban clung to a 70-63 lead. Over the final 44 seconds, Corban would hit 3-of-4 at the free throw line and hold Evergreen without any more points en route to earning the 10-point win (73-63).
Evergreen was led offensively by Sammi Clark with a game-high 22 points, while Jessica Denmon and Sadee Jones also scored in double figures with 17 and 10 points, respectively. On the boards, Jones registered a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with a three-assist performance by Danielle Swain.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 26-for-69 (37.7%) from the field that included 4-of-12 (33.3%) from beyond the three-point line and 17-of-28 (60.7%) at the free throw line. On the other hand, Evergreen was a combined 21-of-67 (31.3%) from the field, 0-of-8 from long distance and 21-of-29 (72.4%) at the charity stripe.
Both teams will return to action on Friday, January 25th, with Corban hosting conference rival Northwest Christian in Salem and Evergreen taking on No. 22-ranked College of Idaho in Olympia, Washington. Each game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
