ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Northwest Christian University men’s basketball team shot 28% from the field and couldn’t hold onto a halftime lead, suffering their first loss of the season to No. 22 California Maritime Academy on Friday afternoon, 71-48, in the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic.

The Beacons (1-1) held the Keelhaulers to just 22% shooting in the first half and rallied late to take a 27-24 lead into the intermission. Then the low scoring affair quickly turned ugly in the second half as the Beacons shot just 5-for-26 from the field to see CMA pull away.

Cal Maritime (3-0), ranked 22nd in the pre-season NAIA Division II men’s coaches poll, was led by Grant Blaser, scoring 17 points. Dominique Barnes added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

NCU was led by Spencer Coleman (pictured), posting his second consecutive double-double with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. Austin Kuemper added 11 points and six rebounds while Remi White came off the bench to score five points and grab a game-high four steals.

The Beacons will look to put the loss behind them as they face off against tournament host William Jessup in the headline game on Saturday night at 7:00 pm.
