Corban Earns Wire-to-Wire Win Over Pioneers of Lewis & Clark

SALEM, Ore. – Three Warriors scored in double figures, as Corban University extended its winning streak to two games with a 71-49 wire-to-wire, non-conference win over NCAA Division III member Lewis & Clark College Tuesday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Corban (5-5) knocked down a season-high 11 three-pointers on the night, as Tara Vanweerdhuizen and Jade Lowery led the Warriors in scoring with a game-high tying 15 points each to go along with a 10-point effort by Julia Young. Vanweerdhuizen also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with a game-high five blocked shots, while Lowery handed out a game and season-high eight assists to go along with a game-high tying three steals for the Warriors. The Warriors' Sadie Pilgeram had the best all-around game of her young career with four points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, while Megan Benedict aided Corban's offense with nine points on a trifecta of three-pointers.
Lewis & Clark (3-4) was led offensively by Tayler Wang with a game-high tying 15 points, while Katie Anderson was the only other Pioneer in double figures with 14 points. On the boards, Ayisat Afolabi pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds off the bench for the Pioneers to go along with a team-best three assists each by Anderson and Wang.
Corban began the game by hitting its first three shots all from long distance en route to building a 9-4 lead over the opening two-plus minutes. The Warriors would extend their lead to nine points (13-4) on a three-pointer by Young at the 15:26 mark before Lewis & Clark used an 11-4 run over a span of five minutes to pull within four points (17-13) on a fast break lay-in by Kaitlin Mathewson with 11:04 on the clock. Over the next four minutes, Corban used a 13-3 run to extend its lead to 14 points (30-16) on a fast break lay-in by Lowery with just under seven minutes left. The Warriors would push their lead to a first half-high 18 points (39-21) at intermission thanks to a half-ending 9-5 run that concluded on a jumper by Corban's Haley Holboke for the final points of the opening half.
The second half would begin with Lowery hitting a lay-in followed by a fast break jumper in the paint by Young that pushed Corban's lead to a game-high 22 points (43-21) with 19:22 remaining in the game. The host Warriors would continue to hold a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the game, as Lewis & Clark would pull within 10 points (50-40) after a 19-7 run over a span of nine minutes cut the Pioneers' deficit with Wang ending the run on a lay-in at the 10:08 mark. Corban quickly pushed its lead back to 21 points with a 13-3 run over a span of seven minutes, as the Warriors held a 66-45 lead after a three-pointer by Young with just under three minutes left. Over the final three minutes, Corban outscored Lewis & Clark by one point en route to earning the 22-point win (71-49).
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 28-for-65 (43.1%) from the field that included an 11-for-25 (44.0%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 4-for-6 (66.7%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, Lewis & Clark was a combined 13-for-58 (22.4%) from the field, 5-of-18 (27.8%) from long distance, and 18-for-27 (66.7%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to action on Friday, December 13th, at the KER Classic against tournament-host Whitman beginning at 8:00 p.m. in Walla Walla, Washington.
