NEWBERG, Ore. – Sophomore Austin Kuemper (pictured) scored 34 points and pulled down ten rebounds on Tuesday night, but NCU couldn't withstand a late barrage from George Fox, falling in overtime, 82-79.

The Bruins' Jonny Howard sank three free throws with 0.5 seconds remaining in regulation and hit three of his seven three-pointers in overtime to lift GFU to the win.

A slow start to the game saw both teams struggle to get on the board as neither squad was able to score for the first two and a half minutes. Then, NCU took charge, scoring six straight points. The game remained close until a 12-3 run by the Beacons gave the visitors a 31-21 lead with 3:10 to play, their largest lead of the half. The Bruins, however, closed the frame with an 11-1 spurt of their own, climbing to within 33-32 at the intermission.

An all-out war ensued in the second half as the teams fought through 12 lead changes, four ties, and no lead larger than four points for either team. The last four-point lead was a 63-59 advantage for the Beacons with 43 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws from Kuemper.

Howard hit a three-pointer with 29 seconds to play, trimming the NCU margin to one point. On the next Beacon possession, Spencer Coleman was fouled and bagged both free-throws for a three-point lead. Howard and NCU's Travis Pacos traded single free throws on the next two possessions, setting up the Bruins for one last chance to tie.

Howard, closely guarded by Nick Sullivan, got off a contested three-point attempt in the final second and drew the foul, then netted all three freebies to send the game into overtime.

The Bruins took over in the extra frame with Howard draining a trey with 4:35 remaining to give GFU a 69-66 lead. They never trailed again, taking a 77-70 advantage after back-to-back Howard three-pointers and George Fox was able to keep the Beacons at bay to close out the contest.

George Fox wins their second game in a row in the storied rivalry between the two Oregon small colleges. Dating back to 1984, the Bruins hold a 22-6 lead in the all-time series. It was the second overtime game between the schools.

For the Beacons (5-3) Kuemper shot 11-for-17 from the field and added 12 free-throw makes to finish with a season-high 34. Adding ten rebounds, he records his fourth double-double of the season. Coleman  also posted a double-double, scoring 22 points and 13 rebounds. The senior forward shot 8-for-12 from the field and led all Beacons with four assists and three steals. Pacos ended the game with 14 points and two steals. The Beacons shot 46% in the game but were just 2-for-16 from three-point range including an 0-for-3 clip in overtime.

Howard finished with a career-high 29 points for the Bruins (5-1), shooting a lights-out 7-for-11 from three-point range. Spencer Bolte added 13 points along with game-highs of five assists and four steals. Seth Brent led George Fox in rebounding, coming in off the bench to snag eight off the glass. GFU shot 37% in the game.

The Beacons will look to put this game behind them quickly as they open Cascade Collegiate Conference action on Friday night, traveling to Salem to take on Corban University at 7:30 pm.
