BOX SCORE - Concordia vs. Northwest

PORTLAND, Ore.—With all five starters scoring at least eight points, Concordia defeated Northwest University 69-49 in Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball action on Friday night.

With the win, Concordia improved to 9-14 overall and 3-10 in the CCC. Northwest fell to 2-19 overall and 1-13 in league play. The Cavaliers will host Evergreen on Saturday while Northwest will stay in town to face Warner Pacific. Opening tip is set for 5:30 p.m. for both teams.

Battling for a playoff spot, Concordia jumped out to a 12-2 start against the Eagles with five different players scoring in the first five minutes of play.

Randi McReynolds gave the Cavaliers an 11-point lead (18-7) with a jumper at the 12:19 mark before a Jordan Asher fastbreak layup, keyed by a steal from teammate Corrine Burke, capped a 7-0 run for the Eagles to cut the lead to seven.

The Cavaliers stayed focused in the final stages of the first half and rebuilt their lead to 13 points with Amundsen draining the final bucket of the period for a 36-23 advantage at the break.

Northwest was able to pull within 11 points on a Dani Mendezona jumper with 11:24 remaining but Concordia’s defense held firm, limiting the Eagles to 26 percent shooting on the night, en route to the 20-point win.

“It was a great team effort tonight,” CU head coach Aaron Christian said.  “We got consistent effort throughout the game. We avoiding any ‘let downs’ as what we got in the first half we got in the second half. “

The Cavs, meanwhile, shot 39 percent from the floor in the contest and outrebounded Northwest 56 to 36.

Junior point guard Kelly Huey led the Cavs with 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting and tied McKenna Daly with a game-high nine rebounds. Daly was next on CU’s scoring list with an 11-point night while Malori Dixon, Concordia’s leading scorer on the season, ended with 10 points.

“We got great contributions from our ‘bigs’,” Christian said. “They hit tough shots and grabbed key boards.”

Northwest was led by 10 points from Asher and was followed by nine points each from Mendezona and Chanara Greene.
