Wingett Leads Concordia to Corban Invite Title

SALEM, Ore.—Overcoming a slim deficit after the first round of play, the Concordia men’s golf team captured its third tournament of the year with a 29-stroke win at the Corban Invitational held at Creekside Golf Course on Tuesday.
Concordia (298-299-297—894) trailed North Idaho C.C. 296 to 298 after the first tour, but continued to post two more sub-300 rounds for the victory.
North Idaho (296-320-307—923) was doomed by a 320 in the second round of play but managed to hold on to second place by 18 strokes over Simpson University (321-308-312—941). Corban (318-308-316—942) and Warner Pacific (333-303-313—949) finished out the top five in the team standings.
Through three of the five Cascade Collegiate Conference tournaments, the Cavaliers (2,711) now hold a 66-stroke lead over Warner Pacific (2,777) for the conference championship. Closing in on the Knights of WPC, Corban (2,805) holds the No. 3 spot.
Tied for the first-day lead, Concordia’s Jess Wingett (73-74-70—217) maintained is residency at the top of the leaderboard for his first career collegiate medalist honor. Wingett took over sole possession of first place with a 2-over 74 in the middle round before posting the best overall round of the tournament with a 2-under on Tuesday.
The 1-over 217 total was good for a 5-stroke win over Northwest Christian’s Tyler Falk (76-73-73—222) and was also a career best for a 54-hole tournament with his previous best a 224 at the Battle of Primm in Nevada in 2012.
All four Concordia scorers placed inside the top six with Jed Dalton (76-74-75—225) tying for fourth place overall. One stroke back of Dalton, Kolton Kyne (73-76-77—226) and Tanner Maahs (76-75-75—226) shared sixth place.
Other top-10 finished by CCC golfers were College of Idaho’s Kyle DeLorey (74-78-73—225) in fourth place, Warner Pacific’s John-Michael Pilot (79-75-73—227) in eighth and Corban’s Jared Lambert (76-74-78—228) in a tie for ninth.
