No. 11 Oregon Tech Completes Sweep of Northwest
PORTLAND, Ore. – No. 11 ranked Oregon Tech swept a doubleheader from Northwest University at Normandie Park in the Rose City today, 9-0 and 9-3. The games were moved from the Kirkland area due to weather conditions on Friday and a resumed this morning at Irv Linden Field. A light rain delayed the start of the first game one hour, but clearing skies allowed the games to be played.
The first game was a resumption of the game originally started in Kirkland on Friday with Oregon Tech Leading 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. It took the Hustlin’ Owls 16 minutes to complete the game as they scored two runs in the top of the 5
th inning to end the contest and earn a 9-0 conference win. Taylor Schmidt got the win for OIT limiting Northwest to just three hits and no runs in 5 innings. On Friday, Tech scored two runs in the 1
st on Jess Plummer’s two run homerun. A three run second inning gave the Owls a 5-0 lead as Kenzie Shrum singled in two runs and Shauna Collins scored on a sacrifice fly by teammate Plummer. OIT built a 7-0 lead in the 3
rd inning as two runs scored on two Northwest errors. Tech finished off their scoring in the 5
th as Shauna Collins singled in Danielle Sayres and Kenzie Shrum batted in Collins with her single to right field. OIT scored their 9 runs on 10 hits and no errors to improve to 15-6 in the CCC.
The second game saw a close, 2-1 game for the first three innings. Tech’s big inning came in the top of the 4
th as they put together 6 runs on 5 hits. Melissa Logan led off with a double and was singled home by Taylor Schmidt who later scored after a bases loaded walk. The big hit came with Sara Coates’ 3 run home run to left center scoring Kenzie Shrum and Shauna Collins in front of her. Northwest battled and got two runs back in the bottom of the 5
th inning when Lynzee Halcott scored on an error after she singled to left field earlier. Sandra Cleveland drove in Ricki Tacdol with her base hit after Tacdol had reach base after a walk. OIT pitchers Rylee Carlton and Taylor Schmidt gave up 8 Northwest hits and three runs. The Eagles’ Ashley Curtis went 2 for 3 from the plate while Tech’s Sara Coates, Alyssa Davis and Kaitlyn Anderson all went 2 for 3 for the Owls who improved to 32-11 for the season, 16-6 in CCC play. Northwest U. dropped to 4-14 in league play and 7-25 overall.
“I felt our 8 hits and play against a solid and well-coached Oregon Tech team was a positive,” said John Bacon, Northwest U. head coach. “We met our team goals and Tech showed why they are on the of top teams in a tough league. All in all it was a good weekend for our young team, given the circumstances of the weather. moving our games from our home field and taking on two good teams from the Cascade Conference. We'll continue to strive to improve.”
Northwest will complete their home schedule on Tuesday, April 16 as they host Concordia at Everest Park in Kirkland at 1 p.m. Oregon Tech returns to Klamath Falls and will host Northwest Christian and No. 8 Corban on April 19 and 20.
