Oregon Tech Earns Split Over College of Idaho with 10-4 Win in Nightcap
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech’s Chase Meister struck out seven in his nine inning complete-game effort as the Owls took the nightcap over College of Idaho, 10-4, while the Yotes scored 10 unanswered runs to defeat Tech 10-2 in game 1, as the teams split today’s NAIA West doubleheader this afternoon at Kiger Stadium.
After giving up two runs in the opening inning, C of I’s Ryan Eddy settled down and would move to 7-2 on the hill tossing the next 5.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Eddy went 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits and striking out five.
Craig Kathol (1-8) took the loss for Tech allowing three runs in eight innings and striking out four.
The Owls scored their only runs in their first at-bat as Alex Reynolds and Tyson Dahl opened up with back-to-back singles. A pass ball scored Reynolds with Ethan Schlecht collecting an RBI single in the inning.
Leading 3-2 after six innings, C of I’s big blow came in a four-run eighth inning, highlighted by Jesse Dodd’s second homerun of the game, a two-run shot. The Yotes tacked on three more runs in the final inning to win by the final 10-2 margin.
Alex Reynolds, Tyson Dahl and Aaron Bocchi recorded two hits each for the Owls with Bocchi adding a double and Ethan Schlecht gathering Tech’s only RBI in game 1.
Seth Champlin finished with three hits and a RBI, while Jesse Dodd drove in three runs on his two homeruns. Jake Hennessey added two hits with Nick Muncy and Jarel Lewis driving in two runs each in the opener.
Game 2 – Trailing the Yotes 2-0, The Owls exploded for four runs in the second inning and three more in the third inning to go up 7-2.
A bases loaded double by Dustin Norman cleared the bases in the second inning, while Jared Nelson knocked in Tech’s fourth run of the inning on a single. A Tyler Conklin double in the third frame drove in two to highlight a three-run inning to put the Owl on top for good.
College of Idaho managed to cut their deficit to three, 7-4, with a pair of runs in their half of the sixth, but the Owls tacked on three in the bottom of the sixth before a rain delay lasting nearly an hour ensued. The inning would end 50 minutes later on a ground out, as Tech held a 10-4 advantage.
In the sixth inning for the visitors Riley Humberger singled in a run, while a sacrifice fly by Champlin rounded out the scoring for C of I.
For Tech, Alex Reynolds doubled to left field driving in two, while Dylan Rogers doubled in a run to give the Owls a 10-4 lead prior to the delay.
Tech starter Chase Meister took the mound after the rain delay, walking the first batter, but would strike out the next three Yotes, all looking, as the game continued. Neither team would score over the remainder as Tech earned the split with the 10-4 win in the nightcap.
Ryan Bocchi and Tyler Conklin finished with two hits with Dustin Norman driving in three runs in the game 2 victory. Conklin and Alex Reynolds recorded two RBI with Chase Meister improving to 4-5 on the mound after scattering nine hits in his nine innings on the hill.
Jarel Lewis finished 3-for-5 at the plate for C of I with Riley Humberger coming up with two RBI on two hits. Parker Vernon (5-3) picked up the loss going four innings and allowing six hits and four earned runs.
The teams will try to complete a four-game NAIA West series on Sunday in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 11 am.
