No. 5 Lewis-Clark State defeats Concordia 8-2 for Series Win
Box Score
PORTLAND—No. 5 Lewis-Clark State’s Seth Haehl held the Concordia baseball team to three hits in seven innings from the mound, as the Warriors beat the Cavs 8-2 at Porter Park Sunday to take the series, 3-1.
Haehl only gave up one run in his seven innings of work for the Warriors, and did not walk or hit a Cavalier batter in the game.
The Warriors’ offense, meanwhile, gave Haehl early run support, as the Warriors went up 5-0 early with single runs in the first and third sandwiched around three runs in the second. Ryan Tannehill highlighted the Warriors’ early run production, as he hit a ground-rule double with the bases loaded in the second. Tannehill’s double was just three feet away from clearing the fence for a grand slam, but the ball got stuck between the top of the padding in right field and the wire fence that extends three feet higher.
The Cavs, meanwhile, scored their first run of the game when Jimmy Sanchez and Blake Drake strung two hits together with two outs in the third. Sanchez started the mini-rally, as he recorded the Cavs’ first hit in the game off Haehl with a single through the left side of the infield. Drake then followed Sanchez with a triple down the left-field line, scoring Sanchez all the way from first.
The Warriors added another run in the sixth to go up 6-1 on the Cavs when leadoff hitter Jake Shirley singled in Brian Corliss from second. The Warriors could have scored more in the inning, as they loaded the bases with only one out, but Blake Evetts came on in relief at that point for the Cavs, and got the next two LC State batters out to end the inning.
Evetts was a bright spot for the Cavs in the game, as he retired all eight batters he faced, shutting the Warriors out over 2.2 innings of work.
The Warriors added two more runs in the ninth off CU closer Christian Bannister, before the Cavs capped the scoring in the game with a final run in the bottom of the ninth. Tariq Staton plated both of the Warriors’ runs in the ninth on a one-out triple to right-center field, while Carl Beckert gave the Cavs their final run with a single to left.
Overall, the Warriors outhit the Cavs 11-8 with five different players recording two hits in the game. Of the five players with two hits, Corliss added two runs and an RBI, while Tannehill and Staton each added a run scored and two runs batted in.
Beckert was the only player with two hits in the game for the Cavs, as he went 2-for-4 with a run batted in.
Haehl picked up the well-deserved win from the mound, while CU starter Jason Snodgrass picked up the loss after giving up four runs over two innings of work.
Both teams will return to action Friday, April 12, as Concordia hosts Menlo for the first of a four-game series, while Lewis-Clark State hosts Simpson. Both of the teams’ games on Friday will begin at 6 p.m.
