PORTLAND, Ore. – The Concordia University Cavaliers men's soccer team kicked off their 2013 season winning 2-0, as forward Septi Danciu (Bristita, Romania/Evergreen H.S.) scored the game-winner and registered an assist against the University College of the Fraser Valley at Tuominen Yard on Aug. 26.

Danciu scored the game winner in the 33rd minute, as he was able to corral a misplayed clearance that quickly gave him the opportunity to break free and fire the shot from five-yards out.

Concordia (1-0-0) would then put the game in their hands as they opened the second half on the attack as midfielder Radcliff McDougald put home his first goal of the season in the 49th minute. Following a shot by Timur Zhividze (Bobrov, Russia/Evergreen H.S.) that glanced off the right post, Danciu poked the ball across the face of the net to an open McDougald, who punched in the team's second goal from five yards out.

"Across the board the team stuck with the game, we did find times where we found ourselves lagging," said men's soccer head coach Dan Birkey on today's performance. "I thought our backs did a great job clearing balls as needed to keep the game ours."

Fraser Valley would find a few opportunities within the second half to score a goal, including a shot by forward Justin Sekhon who worked his way up the left side plank only to watch his shot sail inches over the crossbar.

Danciu's tally gave the senior his sixth career match registering a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Scott Gross (Gladstone, Ore./Gladstone H.S.) moved to 1-0 on the season, as he had to make six saves on 14 shots. Today's win was also his fourth career shutout.

The Navy's next match will be on Saturday, Aug. 31 as they head east to Hastings, Neb. to face Hastings College. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. (PST).
