PORTLAND, Ore.—Fighting for position for one of the final playoff spots for the CCC Tournament, Warner Pacific made a significant move up in the conference standings with a 75-62 win over Concordia on Saturday.
With both teams sporting the same 1-8 mark in conference play to begin the night, Warner Pacific, now 6-15 overall on the season, jumped into a half-game lead over Northwest Christian for eighth in the CCC ledger. The loss was the seventh straight in conference play for Concordia, who fell to 4-18 overall
An evenly-matched first half saw 10 lead changes and a pair of ties. Tied 31-31 in the last minute of the first half,
Sarah Letourneau (Glendora, Calif./Glendora H.S.) gave the Cavs the final point of the opener, and the slim lead, by converting 1 of 2 attempts from the free throw line.
The Knights reclaimed the lead on the opening position of the second half and would quickly extend its advantage to six (41-35) on a Janelle Weiss jumper. This was the only lead change for the remainder of the game as Warner Pacific eventually built as much as a 17-point lead late in the half.
A 3-pointer by CU's
Kelly Huey (San Francisco, Calif./Lincoln H.S.) cut the lead to one point (41-40) with 13:17 left on the clock, but the Warriors returned later on with a 12-2 run to put away the team's first conference road win of the season.
Weiss led the Knights with 17 points and was followed by 13 from Jordan Wilcox.
Concordia saw a strong night from senior
Caitlyn McCutcheon (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy), who had 12 points and nine boards. Huey, meanwhile, recorded a team-high 13 points and game-high seven assists.
Concordia and Warner Pacific leave Portland next weekend with the two teams traveling to play College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon. The Cavs will face C of I and the Knights EOU on Jan. 31, before flip-flopping opponents on Feb. 1.
