LA GRANDE, Ore. – Sydney Nelson’s goal in the 33rd minute of the game was enough to give Eastern Oregon University women’s soccer team their first Cascade Collegiate Conference win of the season, as EOU defeated Evergreen State College, 1-0, Thursday afternoon.
The Mountaineers looked to score early in the game. Nelson fired two shots within four second of each other, the first blocked and the second went wide to keep the game scoreless.
Danika Pink looked to break the scoreless tie as she fired a shot on Kyla Kitts. Kitts made the save to keep the game tied, 0-0. Three minutes later, Makensie Forsyth fired a shot on Kitts, who made the save again. Forsyth followed her shot as the rebound got away from Kitt and fired her second shot that went off the post.
Later in the first half, Evergreen’s Kenzie Phillips fired a shot on goal but Jessica Parker recorded the save.
Nelson kept up the offensive pressure for the Mountaineers in the first half. In the 33rd minute of the game, Nelson fired a shot that Kitt made the save on, however, Kitt could not control the rebound and Nelson was the first to the ball. Nelson took the shot and found the back of the net to put EOU ahead, 1-0.
Evergreen looked to tie the game in the 44th minute of the game but Parker made the save and EOU would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Geoducks had the first two scoring chances in the second half. Two minutes into the half, Phillips fired a shot that went high. Twenty-five minutes later, Phillips fired another shot on goal but the shot went wide.
Eastern Oregon looked to add their lead late in the second half. Katherine Hood and Maddi Cillay both took shots, with one shot missing high and the other wide. Evergreen could not mount any momentum after the shots and EOU claimed the, 1-0, victory over Evergreen.
The Mountaineers outshot the Geoducks, 13-9, in the game.
EOU returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18 when they host Northwest University at 12 p.m. Evergreen returns to action on Saturday as they take on College of Idaho at 12 p.m. MT.
