Knights Overcome Lights, Southern Oregon in CCC Win
PORTLAND, Ore. - Warner Pacific overcame a power outage and a tough Southern Oregon squad on the way to a 2-1 win on senior night at Damazo Field.
The Basics
• Score: Warner Pacific 2, Southern Oregon 1,
• Records: WPC (7-7-2, 4-2-1 CCC), SOU (5-9-2, 3-4-1 CCC)
• Location: Kathryn Damazo Field - Portland, Ore.
• The Short Story: The Knights scored a pair of goals in the second half to earn a crucial Cascade Conference victory at home. The result puts WPC all alone in 3rd place in the CCC standings with two games to play and a step closer to hosting a playoff game for the first time in program history. The contest was delayed for 20 minutes after the generator powering the lights for the field failed and had to be restarted.
How it Happened
• The two sides battled to a scoreless first half. WP keeper Allie Holterman made three saves to keep SOU at bay.
• Cristal Ruvalcaba put the Knights on the board after a nice passing combination. In the 58th minute, Kayla Currin lofted a pass into the box that Ashley Valencia deftly touched across to a waiting Ruvalcaba.
• Soon after the goal, the players were forced to wait 20 minutes in the dark while the generator that temporarily powers the lights at Damazo Field was not functioning.
• With power restored, the visiting Raiders wasted no time in finding the equalizer. Presley Lambert tapped in a searching pass from Jacqui Galvez that Holterman misjudged.
• The lead for SOU was short-lived. At the 65:05 mark,
Staci Tatum took a pass from
Elle' Nelson close to the center circle and let fly a shot that just cleared the fingertips of Raider keeper Devon Walker.
• Southern Oregon threw numbers forward the rest of the game in an effort to even the score, but Holterman made three additional saves to preserve the win.
• The Raiders finished with a 14-6 advantage in shots taken, and tallied two corner kicks to zero for the Knights.
• WPC seniors Allie Holterman, Rayssa Lira, Molly Klinkhammer, and Ashley Valencia were honored before the game.
