Northwest Pulls Off Five Set Win at Oregon Tech
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – A trio of Eagles, led by a match-high 18 from Amanda Waterman led Northwest University to an upset win at Oregon Tech 3-2, (21-25, 25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 15-7) in Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball action tonight at Danny Miles Court.
Oregon Tech falls to 20-9 overall and 6-7 in CCC play. NU, meanwhile, upped their overall mark to 12-13 and 5-9 in the CCC standings.
Set 1- Trailing 15-13 to visiting Northwest University, Oregon Tech used a pair of three point runs to swing momentum their way, taking a 19-16 lead. The Owls would hold off the Eagles in the opener winning by a 25-21 margin.
Kelsey Sampson and Renee Baumann paced Tech with three kills each, while using four aces, two from Tori Porter, to help earn the opening set decision.
Rae Ann Haistings tallied three kills with Hannah Hanson and Amanda Waterman tacking on two for NU in set 1.
Set 2- It was all Eagles to open set 2 with the visitors pounding out a 15-8 lead before the Owls called their first timeout. Tech, trailing 19-11, showed some life and after a Madisen Garlie and Mykala Rubey block, a NU attack error and Rubey kill, the Owls closed their deficit to 19-14.
Amanda Waterman, however, came up with a big kill to get the momentum and serve back to the Eagles. Oregon Tech got as close as six points, but NU would never be challenged, winning by a decisive 25-17 score.
Waterman tallied seven kills in the set to lead NU to the win. Haistings came up with four and Hanson three with Leia Roy recording two aces.
Tech’s Baumann kept pace with three more kills and Sampson two.
Set 3- Oregon Tech’s Porter served up an ace to open set 3. NU, however, scored the next four points and took control for the remainder. Tech, trailing 17-11, pulled to within three points on two occasions, the last at 19-16, but the Eagles would move on to a 25-20 win and go up 2-1.
Set 4- Seven ties and five changes in the lead made for an exciting finish to set 4, as the Owls tied it up 2-2 with a 25-23 win.
NU trailed 6-3 early, but a five-point run gave the lead back to the Eagles, 8-6. NU would hold on to the slim advantage all the way to 18-16. A pair of Baumann kills, and one form Linsey Jones gave Tech their first lead, 19-18, since early in the set.
NU’s Haistings recorded back-to-back kills, with Roy adding an ace to push the Eagles back on top 21-19.
The Owls, trailing 22-20, took advantage of three NU miscues with a Porter ace, her fourth of the match, giving Tech a two point lead, 24-22.
A kill by NU’s Hanson got the visitors to within one, 24-23, but Kristen Depaoli tied the match at 2-2 with her third kill of the set, 25-23.
Set 5 – The teams see-sawed through the first half of the final set, tied at 6-all before NU made their move. A Hanson kill, followed by a Brooke Riddle ace made it 8-6 with a NU service error pulling Tech back to 8-7. NU, then, went on to score the next seven-straight using a pair of Waterman kills and Olivia Vandlac aces to pull out a 15-7 victory in set 5 and move on to the 3-2 upset win.
Renee Baumann led the Owls with 13 kills, followed by nine kills from Kelsey Sampson. Madisen Garlie tacked on seven with Whitney Webster adding five in the loss for Tech. Tori Porter finished with 19 assists and four aces and Waverly Green 17 assists for the Owls. Four players finished with double digit digs led by 13 each from Porter and Baumann with Sampson recording 12 and Brooke Molloy 10.
Amanda Waterman tallied a match-high 18 kills, followed by Rae Ann Haistings with 14. Hannah Hanson rounded out NU players in double digit kills with 11. The duo of Morgan Pilon and Brooke Riddle combined for 51 assists with Leia Roy coming up with a match-high 28 digs. Waterman followed with 22 digs and Olivia Vandlac 20 in the win for NU.
