Deeper Redhawks Pull Away to Defeat Northwest U
SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle University pulled away in the second half for an 84-58 exhibition victory over Northwest University tonight in Connolly Center. SU used their depth to outscore the Eagles 47-33 as NU suited up 9 players for the game due to injury.
Jarell Flora led SU (5-5) with a game high 24 points while teammate Isiah Umipig dropped in 13 for the Redhawks from the NCAA Division I Western Athletic Conference. The game was classified as an exhibition game for Northwest U and will not count against their overall season record.
Northwest stayed with the Redhawks in the first half and Nemanja Grujicic's lay-in in the paint with 8:04 to go in the half pulled the Eagles to within two, 21-19. SU would then go on an 8-1 run capped off by Jadon Cohee's 3-pointer to increase the SU lead to 29-20 at the 6:29 mark. Northwest U would go cold from the outside against the SU zone, going 2 for 7 the remainder of the half as Seattle U would build a 37-25 lead at halftime. The Eagles shot 31% in the first period as SU hit 59% including 4 for 7 shooting (57%) from the 3-point line.
Dak Shagren's trey would cut the SU lead to 11, 39-28 with 18:48 remaining, but Seattle U would reel off a 14-5 run to push the Redhawk lead to 53-33 at the 15:46 mark. The Eagles would not be able to get any closer as the Redhawks would slowly pull away for the win.
Three Eagles scored in double figures, led by Dak Shagren and C.J. Carter's 13 points. Nemanja Grujicic added 10 as the Eagles shot 35% for the game. NU's 3-point shooting improved in the second half as they shot 45% (5-11) from the arc.
In addition to Flora's 14 and Umipig's 13, Manroop Clair added 12 points and Jadon Cohee contributed 11 for Seattle University. SU held a 43-26 rebounding advantage and hit 63% (7 for 11) from the 3-point line in the second half, 61% for the game (11 for 18).
"We couldn't match their depth and that's one of the differences between an NAIA Division II and NCAA Division I level team," said John Van Dyke. "Not having Jeremy (Paull) and Tomas (Ogbaslassie) tonight hurt us in our rotation, but I felt the guys that played gave a good effort. We need to polish up certain areas and continue to improve as the season progresses."
The Eagles resume conference play this weekend when they host Northwest Christian and Corban in the NU Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
