PORTLAND, Ore.—In a key battle for positioning in the conference tournament, senior
Adam Herman (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) carried Concordia with 30 points as the Cavaliers defeated Southern Oregon 78-53 on Saturday night to conclude the CCC regular season.
Concordia (22-8, 11-7 CCC) never trailed in the game and generated a 33-point lead at the half (54-21) after shooting over 50 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes of play.
Up by a point early in the first, Concordia rattled off a 10-0 run with Herman and
Willy Ligon (Corona, Calif./Centennial H.S.) combining for 14 of the team's first 19 points, staking a 19-8 lead with 13:30 left in the half.
The run was brought to an end with a layup by SOU's Jeff Bush, but hitting just 3 of 17 from 3-point range in the first half, the Raiders deficit swelled to more than 30 points before the break. With less than a second left, Herman wrapped-up the half with a pair of free throws to make the score 54-21 at the half.
Coming back from a frustrating first half, Southern Oregon (22-8, 11-7 CCC) immediately went on a 14-2 run after the break, but could not pull closer than a 21-point difference following a Dax Daum 3-pointer with 4:35 to play.
Celebrating Senior Night before the start of the game, Herman posted his fourth 30-poiont game in CU's last six games and upped his season scoring average to 25.0 points per game. Herman finished 14 of 15 from the free throw line and added nine rebounds.
Teammate
Esvan Middleton (Culver City, Calif./Culver City H.S.) provided a force on the glass throughout the game for the Cavs, grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end.
Southern Oregon had three players in double figures with David Sturner and Eric Thompson leading the way with 13 points each.
Both teams will advance to the postseason play with No. 2-seed Concordia hosting No. 7-seed Oregon Tech on Wednesday night. Southern Oregon fell to the No. 3 seed with the loss and will host No. 6-seeded Northwest Christian in Ashland, Ore. Both contests will be scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
