EUGENE, Ore. – After dropping a close game to Northwest University on the road back in December, the Northwest Christian University men’s basketball team was looking for a little payback on Friday night with the return meeting. With senior Travis Pacos leading the charge, the Beacons owned the night with a 86-74 victory.  One of the best thieves in the CCC, Pacos tied the school record for steals on Friday night with six, including five in the second half.

The Beacons (14-6, 7-4 CCC) took control from the get go, storming out to an 13-3 lead. The Eagles never got closer than eight points from that point on as NCU dominated both ends of the floor. The Beacons shot 54% from the floor including a 9-for-19 night from three-point range and also posted an 83% night at the free-throw line. Northwest Christian forced 21 turnovers and had 11 steals.

After going scoreless on Friday night, junior Austin Kuemper was back to form on Saturday, scoring a game-high 25 points for the Beacons along with a game-leading eight rebounds. Javonte Byrd came off the bench to score 18 points and Pacos scored 15. Pacos was 6-for-8 from the field including a perfect 3-for-3 night from beyond the arc. Michael Loomis added ten points and Jay Mayernik filled up the stat sheet with four points, six rebounds and a game-high six assists.

Northwest (12-11, 2-9) was led by CJ  Carter with 19 points. The senior scored just two points in the first half but woke up in a big way over the final 20 minutes, shooting 7-for-8 from the field. Dak Shagren also had a big night in the loss with 17 points, hitting a game-high five three-pointers. Tomas Ogbalassie scored 16 for the Eagles with 13 of them coming in the second half. NU shot 49% in the game and 87% at the free-throw line.

NCU will hit the road next weekend for a crucial pair of games in the southern part of the state. On Friday the Beacons will look to do something they haven’t done in 29 years: win a road game against Oregon Tech. Then on Saturday NCU will face off against Southern Oregon University, looking to extend their four-game winning streak in the series.

Northwest returns home next weekend to host travel partner Evergreen on Saturday night.
