Second Half Surge Lifts Corban to 65-47 win over Oregon Tech

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – A 26-9 run to open the second period gave Corban the momentum they needed defeating Oregon Tech by a 65-47 final in Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball action tonight at Danny Miles Court.
 
Oregon Tech fell to 17-8 overall and with back-to-back losses in conference play the Owls fell to 6-7 in the CCC standings.  Corban improved to 15-10 on the year and 9-4 in the conference standings.
 
Tess Armstrong connected on her first 3-point attempt getting the Owls off to a quick start.  Tech would hold a slim 9-6 advantage through the first six minutes of play over Corban.
 
Sadie Pilgeram’s triple with 13:54 on the clock gave the Warriors their first lead of the contest at 11-9.
 
Carly McIssac’s layup capped a 10-4 run as the Owls held their largest margin of the half with 9:25 remaining in the opening period, 19-13. 
 
Corban, however, would outscore the Owls 18-6 over the next eight minutes and hold their own six point advantage, 31-25. 
 
Katlyn Hashagen nailed a 15-footer to close out the scoring in the half with the Owls trailing by four, 31-27 at the break.
 
Five minutes into the second half a Jade Lowery 3-pointer gave the Warriors their biggest lead of the game, 37-29.  Armstrong answered for Tech on their next trip down court, but a Tara Van Weerdhuizen turnaround jumper bumped the lead back to eight at 39-31. 
 
CU’s lead grew to 14 at on a Payton Wilcox score, 45-31, with 12:25 remaining and Tech’s deficit remained in double digits for the remainder.  The Owls closed to 10 at 48-38, but an ensuing 9-0 Warrior run put the game out of reach with under eight minute to play.  CU led by as many as 23 before settling for the 65-47 win.
 
Ashleigh Vandenbrink led Tech’s offense with nine points, followed by seven each from Tess Armstrong, Karly LeVeque and Carrie Thibault.  Reb Matteri grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. 
 
For the game the Owls hit just 34.5% on 20-of-58 from the floor and 7-for-22 from long range.  Tech shot no free throws in the game compared to 10-of-13 for the visitors.  CU held a slim 35-31 edge on the boards.
 
Tara Van Weerdhuizen led all scorers with 15 points to go with seven rebounds and three block shots.  Payton Wilcox added 14 points and Jade Lowery 10 in the win.  Sadie Pilgeram grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and netted eight points. 
 
CU made 48 percent of their tries on 24-of-50, including 7-14 from the 3-point line.
