SEATTLE – Competing in its first indoor track and field meet of 2015, Southern Oregon University qualified its men's distance medley relay team with an NAIA 'A' standard Friday at the University of Washington's Husky Invitational.

The Raiders were runners-up to the Academy of Art (Calif.) in the 4,000-meter, six-team race, finishing a couple ticks back with a time of 9:58.42 – the fastest recorded mark in the NAIA this season by over 14 seconds and well clear of the 'A' qualifier cutoff of 10:12.72.

Earning a trip to the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships were Zach Boyd-Helm (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) on the first 1,200 meters, JJ Latu (Hawthorne, Calif./Ladybird Johnson) for the 400 portion, Kevin Jorgensen (Yreka, Calif./Yreka) on the 800, and Jared Hixon (Palmdale, Calif./Palmdale) for the final mile.

The national meet will be held March 6-8 just outside of Cleveland, Ohio.

Boyd-Helm and Jorgensen were a part of the Raider DMR foursome that set NAIA records while winning titles the last two seasons.

"I thought it went well with two new faces," SOU head coach Grier Gatlin said. "We can improve a bit, too, which is good."

In the women's distance medley relay, SOU's Karen Silvas (Santa Ana, Calif./Segerstrom), Amelia Maguin (Fernley, Nev./Fernley), Aspen Abbott (Gardnerville, Nev./Douglas) and Jessie Rozario (Rocklin, Calif./Del Oro) were 14th with a time of 12:40.35. They missed the women's NAIA 'A' standard by less than four seconds.

Maguin, an All-American, will also run the 400-meter open race at around 10 a.m. Saturday.

"The gals were a bit off the 'A' but Amelia looked great on her leg so I think she'll run really well tomorrow," Gatlin said.
