Coyotes Run Past Geoducks, 82-66
Visiting College of Idaho played an effective up tempo game Friday night to defeat The Evergreen State College, 82-66, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball game played at Costantino Recreation Center.
The Coyotes (3-8 overall, 3-2 conference) shot the ball very well in the middle two quarters to pull away after leading the Geoducks (3-9, 2-4) by just three points, 21-18, at the end of the first quarter. College of Idaho shot 10-for-16 in the second quarter and 9-for-18 in the third quarter to take what proved to be an insurmountable 68-47 lead into the final period.
The up tempo, full-court pressure defense by the 'Yotes forced 18 Evergreen turnovers that were turned into 25 points.
Evergreen answered with what it does best, getting the ball in the low post to Gabi Fenumiai, and she responded with another solid performance. The senior center from Juneau, Alaska, was 8-for-12 from the field and hit all of three of her free throws on the way to a 19-point performance.
Joining Fenumiai in double digures were Autumn Moorcroft with 14 points and Zaria Jones with 10. Fenumiai led the Geoducks with seven rebounds and both Kylie Gorton and Corina Tacardon finished with four assists.
Evergreen shot an excellent 48 percent from the field overall but ended up with eight less field goals made and four less three-pointers than the 'Yotes.
College of Idaho had a quintet of players achieve double figures, led by Maddie Skaggs with 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting off of the bench. Joining her in double figures were Jaycin Tini with 17 points, Petra Lumpert with 16, Madison Pilster with 11 and Alyssa Case with 10.
The visitors enjoyed a 34-29 rebounding edge, led by Case with seven, and Lumpert led all players with nine assists.
Both teams return to action at 5:30 tomorrow, Evergreen hosting conference co-leader Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho playing Northwest University in Kirkland.
