LA MIRADA, Calif. – The No. 8 EOU volleyball team collected its first sweep of the 2016 campaign, taking down (RV) The Master’s (25-17, 25-19, 25-20) on day two of Biola’s Summer Slam.
The Mountaineers used a team effort as the net, led by junior middle hitter Madisen Garlie’s 10 kills. Junior outside hitter Amanda Miller added eight kills, while senior middle hitter Kasaundra Tuma recorded seven kills and a team-high four blocks. Senior setter Rachelle Chamberlain had 27 assists, and junior libero Malia Mills collected a match-high 14 digs.
EOU (2-1) held the Mustangs to negative hitting percentages (.037, .062) in the opening two frames, while the Mountaineers swung .277 for 33 kills in the match.
Up 11-10 in set one, EOU used two Mustang attack errors and a service ace by Garlie to launch a 10-3 run and gain an eight-point (21-13) advantage. A Miller kill lifted the Blue and Gold to set point (24-17), and The Master’s coughed up another error to surrender the stanza.
Set two saw EOU double up The Master’s (14-7) early, a span in which the Mustangs committed seven unforced errors. After The Master’s got to within two (19-17), Chamberlain and junior middle hitter Emily Nay rose high for the assisted block to spark a 5-2 burst, and at set point, sophomore defensive specialist Holli Mullins delivered the ace to grant EOU a 2-0 lead.
The most competitive set of the match, set three included eight ties and three lead changes before the Mountaineers mustered a five-point (25-20) victory. After The Master’s (1-2) snagged a 17-16 advantage, EOU answered with four-unanswered points, including kills by Miller, Garlie, and senior hitter Makayla Lindburg. At match point (24-20), Tuma put one down at the net to seal the three-set triumph.
