Owls Use Three-Point Onslaught to Top Evergreen
OLYMPIA - Brandon Halter earned Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball player of the week honors last week and got off to a good start toward another possible honor this week by scoring 25 points to lead Oregon Tech past Evergreen, 100-72, on Friday night in Costantino Recreation Center.
Halter was 7-for-10 from beyond the three-point line for the Owls (16-5 overall, 9-2 CCC), who won their 10th consecutive game. As a team, Oregon Tech finished 11-for-20 from beyond the three-point arc.
Evergreen (5-13, 2-10), which suffered its ninth consecutive defeat, got 12 points and 10 rebounds from Ryan Quigley and 12 points from Taylor Drey
Halter was on fire early, hitting a pair of long three-pointers to open the scoring for the Owls, who never trailed in the game. They built their first double-digit lead at 22-11 on Chris Faust's layin just seven minutes into the contest, and by the halftime held a 51-38 advantage. Oregon Tech was 18-for-29 from the field, 62 percent, in the opening half in building its 13-point lead.
The Geoducks cut their deficit to 11 points early in the second half before the Owls used a 21-6 run over 6 1/2 minutes to open up an 81-52 lead with 8:35 to play. After that, it was a matter of determining whether or not they would reach the century mark, and they did so on Tyler Van Kirk's free throw with 15 seconds on the clock.
In addition to Halter's 25 points, the Owls got 19 points from Joel Yellow Owl and 10 points apiece from Bryan Beard, Tyler Hieb and Van Kirk. Oregon Tech, which finished the game shooting 56 percent, had a 39-38 advantage in rebounds, led by Beard with nine. Mitchell Fink finished the game with nine points, seven assists and four steals.
Joining Quigley and Drey in double figures for the Geoducks were Jaurence Chisholm with 11 points and both Jarrick Mitchell and Jonathan Jack-Nixon with 10. Mitchell added eight assists in a losing cause.
Evergreen shot 40 percent overall but was just 3-for-17, or 18 percent, from beyond the three-point line.
Both teams play tomorrow night, Evergreen hosting Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech traveling to Kirkland to play Northwest University.
