OLYMPIA - Taylor Drey scored 25 points and Jarrick Mitchell established a new single-season assists record to lead The Evergreen State College to a 96-69 Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball victory over the Walla Walla Wolves on Sunday afternoon inside Costantino Recreation Center.

With the win, the Geoducks (7-17 overall, 4-14 CCC) stay in the hunt for the eighth spot in the conference postseason tournament. They trail Warner Pacific by two games in the standings and need to win both of their games on the road next weekend while Warner Pacific loses both of its home contests. If that happens, both teams would finish 6-14 in the regular season standings, but the tiebreaker would go to the Geoducks by virtue of two wins over the Knights. Ironically, Evergreen plays the Knights in Portland, Ore., next Friday night, followed by a Saturday evening contest against Multnomah.

Evergreen seniors Drey, Mitchell and Jonathan Jack-Nixon were honored prior to the start of the game, and that seems to have inspired Drey, who drilled four three-pointers on his way to a 20-point first half. The Vancouver, Wash., native would go on to shoot 10-for-19 overall, including 5-for-12 from beyond the arc, in finishing with his 25 points.

Mitchell, a point guard from Las Vegas, Nev., had a strong opening half with six points, three steals and all six of his assists. He now has 142 assists for the season, breaking the old mark of 140 set by Karriem Fielding during the 2003-04 campaign.

Jack-Nixon, from Anchorage, Alaska, ended the game with 13 points and five assists.

The Geoducks scored the game's first seven points, capped by Shawn Spencer's three ball, and they took their first double-digit lead at 16-4 on Drey's triple just 5 1/2 minutes into the contest. The score went to 34-15 on another long-range basket by Drey before the Wolves when on a 14-4 run to get their deficit under double figures with 5:40 left on the first half clock.

Evergreen responded with nine unanswered points, the last seven from Dustin Meade, to take an 18-point advantage, and it wasn't close after that.

The Geoducks shot 52 percent (35-for-67) from the floor and enjoyed a 36-33 rebounding advantage, led by Ryan Quigley and Spencer with seven apiece. Other Evergreen double-figure scorers besides Drey and Jack-Nixon were Meade and Kevin Clayton Jr. with 11 apiece and Quigley with 10.

Chad Torkelson drained six three-point shots to lead the Wolves (3-23, 2-16) with 20 points and he also had team-high rebounding honors with eight. Alec Calloway tallied 12 points and both Isaiah Taylor and Dylan Browning scored 11 for the Wolves, who shot 43 percent (25-for-58).
